Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Electronic Level Control (ELC) air tube from the shock absorber
     
    Both lower shock absorber-to-control arm bolts
     
    Adjustment link outer ball stud nut
     
    Ball stud from the knuckle
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the control arm until the arm bottoms out on the rear suspension support.
  8.  
  9. Using a suitable prying tool, pry under the lower spring insulator to unseat it from the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Insulator and coil spring
     
    Upper spring insulator, if necessary

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Engage the retainer on the back of the insulator in the upper mount hole.


    NOTE
    Be sure to seat the lower insulator in the control arm hole.

  2.  
  3. Raise the control arm into position.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    If necessary to align the cotter pin holes, tighten the nut up to an additional 60 degree ( 1 / 6 ) turn. NEVER loosen the castle nut to align the cotter pin holes.



    Lower shock absorber-to-control arm bolts. Torque both bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Adjustment link ball stud to the knuckle. Torque the castle nut to 55 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     



    ELC air tube to the shock absorber
     
    Rear wheel. Torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Coil springs
     
    Parking brake cable from the brake calipers
     
    Brake calipers from the control arms
     
    Parking brake cable from the rear suspension support assembly
     
    Support assembly electrical connectors
     
    Electronic Level Control (ELC) electrical connector and vent hose
     
    ELC air tube from the air compressor
     

  4.  
  5. Support the rear suspension support assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    3 support bracket-to-chassis bolts at each side
     
    Both front and both rear support assembly bolts
     
    Support assembly
     
    ELC height sensor link from the left control arm
     
    Stabilizer link bolt and nut
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) electrical connector
     
    Wheel/hub assembly
     
    Lower control arm-to-rear suspension support assembly nuts and bolts
     
    Lower control arm

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm-to-rear suspension support assembly nuts and bolts, do not tighten
     
    Wheel/hub assembly
     
    ABS electrical connector
     
    Stabilizer link nut and bolt. Torque the nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
     
    ELC height sensor link to the left control arm
     
    Support assembly
     
    Both front and both rear support assembly bolts. Tighten the nuts to 78 ft. lbs. (106 Nm).
     
    3 support bracket-to-chassis bolts at each side. Torque the bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (86 Nm).
     
    ELC air tube to the air compressor
     
    ELC electrical connector and vent hose
     
    Support assembly electrical connectors
     
    Parking brake cable to the rear suspension support assembly
     
    Brake calipers to the control arms
     
    Parking brake cable to the brake calipers
     
    Coil springs
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Rear wheels. Torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle in order to achieve proper trim height.
  4.  
  5. Torque the lower control arm nuts to 78 ft. lbs. (106 Nm).
  6.
