3.5L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The water pump is attached to the engine with both long and short bolts, be sure to note their locations.



    Water pump pulley bolts, loosen but do not remove at this time
     
    Drive belt
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Water pump pulley

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
     
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Idler pulley. Torque the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Drive belt
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

4.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Secondary AIR injection control valve, if necessary
     
    Oil level indicator tube nut, if necessary
     
    Water pump drive belt cover
     
    Water pump drive belt
     
    Lower radiator hose
     
    Bypass hose
     
    Water pump cover
     
    Water pump from the water pump housing, by turning the locking ring with a Water Pump Remover/Installer tool J-38816

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with new o-ring. Torque the pump to 73 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Water pump cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Lower radiator hose
     
    Coolant bypass hose
     
    Water pump drive belt
     
    Water pump drive belt cover
     
    Oil level indicator tube nut, if necessary
     
    Secondary AIR injection control valve, if necessary
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  4.
