Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



The lower ball joint is integrated with the lower control arm. If worn or damaged, the entire control arm must be replaced.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Front coil spring
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Secure the lower control arm in a bench vise or equivalent.
  6.  
  7. Center punch the rivet heads.
  8.  
  9. Drill out the rivets.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint to the lower control arm
     
    Replacement bolts to the lower control arm
     
    Nuts to the bolts. Tighten the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).

  3. Remove the lower control arm from the bench vise.

    Lower control arm
     
    Coil spring
     
    Tire and wheel tire assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the safety stands.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Verify the wheel alignment.
  10.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Place the lower control arm in a bench vise.
  6.  
  7. Using a chisel, remove the 4 securing crimps from the ball joint body (1500 series only).
  8.  
  9. Using a press, remove the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  10.  

To install:


NOTE
Use the outer flange of the ball joint in order to press the ball joint into place.

  1. Install the new ball joint using a press.
  2.  
  3. Place the lower control arm in a bench vise.
  4.  
  5. Using a punch, install 4 crimps to the ball joint. Use the replaced ball joint as a reference (1500 series only).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the safety stands.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Verify the wheel alignment.
  14.
