Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining nut and separate the upper and lower ball joints from the steering knuckle using a ball joint remover and adapters.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean all grease and contaminants from the tapered section and the threads of the upper ball joint, the lower ball joint, and the tie rod end.
  2.  
  3. Clean and inspect the taper holes and the mounting surfaces of the steering knuckle. If any of the tapered holes are elongated, out of round, or damaged, the replace the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the retaining nut and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the retaining nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the brake hose bracket retaining bolt to the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel hub and bearing.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the safety stands.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle .
  22.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining nut and separate the upper and lower ball joints from the steering knuckle using a ball joint remover and adapters.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.

To install:

  21. Lower the vehicle .

  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining nut and separate the upper and lower ball joints from the steering knuckle using a ball joint remover and adapters.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.

To install:

  21. Lower the vehicle .

Coil Spring Suspension
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining nut and separate the upper and lower ball joints from the steering knuckle using a ball joint remover and adapters.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean all grease and contaminants from the tapered section and the threads of the upper ball joint, the lower ball joint, and the tie rod end.

  13. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.

  15. Install the wheel hub and bearing.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the safety stands.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.

Leaf Spring Suspension

  1. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hub/rotor assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the anchor plate, the splash shield, and the steering arm.
  10.  
  11. Pull the anchor plate and the splash shield off the knuckle. The steering arm hangs by the rods.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts and the washers in order to separate the anchor plate from the splash shield.
  14.  
  15. Separate the steering arm from the tie rod and the pitman arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the caps (1) from the steering knuckle (3).
  20.  
  21. Remove the nut (4) and the washer (5).
  22.  
  23. Remove the lock pin (6).
  24.  
  25. Using a drift, drive the king pin (2) from the steering knuckle. The spacers and the bushings will also come out.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering knuckle from the axle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the dust seal, the shim, and the thrust bearing.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle (3). A new knuckle has new bushings already installed.
  2.  
  3. Install the thrust bearing shim and the dust seal. Lubricate the thrust bearing.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate and install the king pin (2) and the lock pin (6).
    NOTE
    NOTE: Be certain to insert the spacers in the correct order.

  6.  
  7. Install the washer (5) and the nut (4).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the gaskets.
  12.  
  13. Install the caps (1) to the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Check and if needed, adjust the king pin preload.
  16.  
  17. Install the stabilizer bracket and the bolts.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the steering arm, the splash shield, and the anchor plate.
  22.  
  23. Install the bolts and the washers that attach the splash shield to the anchor plate.
  24.  
  25. Install the bolts, the washers, and the nuts that attach the anchor plate and the steering arm to the steering knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the nuts to 230 ft. lbs. (312Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the steering arm to the steering linkage.
  32.  
  33. Install the hub/rotor assembly.
  34.  
  35. Adjust the wheel bearings.
  36.  
  37. Install the brake caliper.
  38.  
  39. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  40.  
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust as needed.
  44.  

Torsion Bar Suspension
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Real Time Damping (RTD) link rod from the sensor, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Unload the torsion bars.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using tool J43631 or equivalent.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower control arm retaining nut.
  18.  
  19. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle using tool J43631 or equivalent.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean all grease and contaminants from the tapered section and the threads of the upper ball joint, the lower ball joint, and the tie rod end.
  2.  
  3. Clean and inspect the taper holes and the mounting surfaces of the steering knuckle. If any of the tapered holes are elongated, out of round, or damaged, replace the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the lower control arm retaining nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the upper control arm retaining nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the brake hose and the bracket retaining bolt to the steering knuckle
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  22.  
  23. Connect the RTD link rod to the sensor, if equipped
  24.  
  25. Install the tire and wheel.
  26.  
  27. Load the torsion bars.
  28.  
  29. Align the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle .
