The parking brake must be adjusted any time the parking brake cables are serviced, or the holding ability is not adequate. Before adjusting the parking brake, check the condition of the service brakes. The service brakes must be adjusted properly before adjusting the parking brake. Refer to the Adjustment procedure in the Brake Shoes section of this manual.

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjusting nut at the equalizer.
  4.  
  5. Set the parking brake by pushing the pedal down 18 degrees.
    1. Insert a 0.125 inch (3 mm) pin into locating hole (1) in the pedal assembly
    2.  
    3. Push the pedal downward until the pin contacts the parking brake outer flange.

  7. Turn the adjusting nut at the equalizer until the wheels rotate forward with a moderate drag.
  8.  
  9. Release the parking brake and rotate the rear wheels. There should be no drag.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Locate the parking brake drum assembly. Its at the back of the transmission extension housing. Remove the clevis pin from the parking brake lever.
  2.  
  3. Set the parking brake by pushing the pedal down 18 degrees.
    1. Insert a 0.125 inch (3 mm) pin into locating hole (1) in the pedal assembly
    2.  
    3. Push the pedal downward until the pin contacts the parking brake outer flange.

  5. Connect a tension gauge to the frame of the truck with a small length of cable and a turn buckle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the tension gauge to the bottom of the parking brake lever and tighten it to 50 lbs. (222N).
  8.  
  9. Loosen the clevis lock nut and turn the clevis until the pin slides freely in the lever. There should be no slack in the cable.
  10.  
  11. Install the clevis pin and a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Remove the gauge and release the parking brake.
  14.  

Before adjusting the parking brake, verify that the park brake shoes are adjusted to provide a clearance of .026 inch.

  1. Verify that the self adjuster lock out pin has be removed.
  2.  
  3. Fully apply and release the park brake lever 3 times.
  4.

  5. Loosen the adjusting nut at the equalizer.

  7. Set the parking brake by pushing the pedal down 18 degrees.

  9. Insert a 0.125 in. (3 mm) pin into locating hole in the pedal assembly.

  11. Push the pedal downward until the pin contacts the parking brake outer flange.

  15. Release the parking brake, remove pin and rotate the rear wheels. There should be no drag.

  17. Lower the vehicle.
