Parking Brake Shoes

For vehicles with rear disc brakes the parking brake uses a drum-in-hat style parking brake.

For vehicles with rear drum brakes the brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes for servicing information.

Adjustment



  1. Set the J 21177-A so that the J 21177-A contacts the inside diameter of the rotor.

  3. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  4.  
  5. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A.

  7. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the opposite side.
  8.  
  9. The clearance between the park brake shoe and the rotor is 0.026 inch (0.66 mm).

  1. Set tool J21177A so that the arms contact the inside diameter of the rotor.
  2.  
  3. Position tool J21177A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  4.  
  5. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts tool J21177-A.
  6.  
  7. Repeat steps for the opposite side.
  8.  
  9. The clearance between the park brake shoe and the rotor is 0.026 inches.
  10.  

  1. Set the J 21177-A so that the J 21177-A contacts the inside diameter of the rotor.

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Turn the adjustment screw (1) to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut.

  17. Remove the park brake shoe assembly by sliding the shoe (2) towards the retaining spring (3) until the shoe is disengaged from the spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Position the park brake shoe on the inboard side of the actuation.
  6.  
  7. Slide the parking brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.
    1. Tighten the nut to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the safety stands.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust parking brake cable
  30.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear hub assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the park brake shoe return springs (4) and (6).
  18.  
  19. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins (3).
  20.  
  21. Remove the park brake shoes (2).

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.

  3. Install the park brake shoes (2).
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins (3).
  6.  
  7. Install the park brake shoe return springs (4 and 6).
  8.  
  9. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear hub assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.
    1. Tighten the nut to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
    2.

  21. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the tire and wheel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the safety stands.

  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever.

  11. Remove the rotor.

  13. Turn the adjustment screw (1) to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut.

  15. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate by removing the tips from the slots and sliding the shoe (2) towards the retaining spring (3) until the shoe is disengaged from the spring.

  17. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it has cleared the flange.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe assembly (2) to the vehicle by placing on of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it is behind the flange.
  6.  
  7. Position the park brake shoe on the inboard side of the actuation.
  8.  
  9. Slide the parking brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.
    1. Tighten the nut to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the safety stands.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust parking brake cable
  30.  

  1. For the 1500HD, relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then removing the cable from the equalizer bar.
  2.  
  3. For the 25/35 series Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  8.  
  9. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
    1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing toward the lever (1).
    2.  
    3. Depress the locking tabs.
    4.  
    5. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4).
    6.  
    7. Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.

  11. Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
  12.  
  13. Remove the rotor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear axle shaft.

  19. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  20.  
  21. Separate the tips of the shoes from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake shoes and adjuster assembly from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2.  
  3. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
  6.  
  7. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  8.  
  9. Install the park brake shoe return spring (6).
  10.  
  11. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable (2) to the lever (1).
  18.  
  19. Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the backing plate (4):
    1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
    2.  
    3. Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
    4.  
    5. Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking tabs snap into place.
    6.

  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the safety stands.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  28.  
  29. For the 1500HD, install the park brake cable to the equalizer by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then installing the cable to the equalizer bar.
  30.  
  31. Adjust the park brake cable.
  32.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the park brake shoe return springs.
  16.  
  17. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  18.  
  19. Remove the park brake shoes.

  25. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the propeller shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut and washer (if equipped with a manual transmission).
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt and washer (if equipped with an automatic transmission).

  11. Disconnect the drum and yoke assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts and washers retaining parking brake support plate to transmission tailshaft.

  15. Disconnect the support plate and the shoe kits.

  19. Remove the shoe kits.

  21. Inspect the springs for signs of wear or excessive heat. Replace as needed.

  23. Inspect the support plate friction points for wear. Replace if wear is excessive.

  1. Connect the shoe kits to the support plate.

  3. Connect the springs.
  4.  
  5. Install the support plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the shoe kits.

  9. Install the index lever between the shoes.

  11. Install the bolts and the washers and tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).

  13. Install the drum and yoke assembly.

  15. Install the washer and the nut (if equipped with manual transmission) and tighten to 350 ft. lbs. (475 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the washer and bolt (if equipped with an automatic transmission) and tighten to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the propeller shaft.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  

  1. Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable from the backing plate:
    1. Compress the spring by pushing toward the lever.
    2.  
    3. Depress the locking tabs.
    4.  
    5. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cable through the slot in the backing plate.

    1. Compress the spring by pushing toward the lever.
    2.  
    3. Depress the locking tabs.
    4.  
    5. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cable through the slot in the backing plate.

  5. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the park brake cable from the park brake actuator lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Turn the adjustment screw to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate by removing the tips from the slots and sliding the shoe towards the retaining spring until the shoe disengages from the spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it has cleared the flange.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe assembly to the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it is behind the flange.
  6.  
  7. Position the park brake shoe on the inboard side of the actuator.
  8.  
  9. Slide the park brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the park brake actuator lever.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the safety stands.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  

Quadrasteer (Nys)
  1. Release the park brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the intermediate cable and releasing the cable from the equalizer bar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear park brake bracket bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the park brake cable from the park brake actuator lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wheel bearing..
  14.  
  15. Remove the park brake assembly and backing plate from the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the park brake shoe retaining clip bolt and retaining clip.
  18.  
  19. Remove the park brake shoe from the actuator.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the park brake shoe to the actuator.
  2.  
  3. Install the park brake shoe retaining clip and retaining clip bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolt to 25 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the park brake assembly and backing plate to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel bearing.
  10.  
  11. Install the park brake cable to the park brake actuator lever.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear park brake bracket bolt and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the park brake cable to the equalizer bar.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.
