Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle with jack stands or similar.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Real Time Damping (RTD) sensor (if equipped).
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and bolt from the frame bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and bolt from the axle bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper control arm retaining bolt and nut to the axle bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper control arm retaining bolt to the frame bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper control arm retaining nut.
    WARNING
    Do not tighten the nuts and bolts unless the suspension is at the vehicle-s curb height. Tightening the control arm nuts and bolt with the suspension extended will cause excessive twisting and premature failure of the control arm-s rubber bushings.

  8.  
  9. Bring the vehicles suspension to curb height (i.e. vehicle standing on it-s wheels).
    1. Tighten the upper control arm retaining bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
    2.  

  10.  
  11. Connect the (RTD) sensor (if equipped).
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear axle support (if necessary).
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle (if necessary).
  16.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the Real Time Damping (RTD) sensor, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower shock absorber nuts and bolt from the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. Lower the rear axle until the springs are fully unloaded.

  9. Remove the spring and the upper and lower insulators.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the spring and the upper and lower insulators.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear spring to the rear axle.
  4.  
  5. Raise the rear axle. Install the lower shock absorber nuts to the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the RTD sensor, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear axle support. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the electronic suspension control (ESC) sensor, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and bolt from the frame bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and bolt from the axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper control arm retaining bolt and nut to the axle bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper control arm retaining bolt to the frame bracket.
    NOTE
    Do not tighten the nuts unless the suspension is at the curb height position.

  6.  
  7. Install the upper control arm retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the upper control arm retaining bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the electronic suspension control (ESC) sensor, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.
