Removal & Installation



Driver's Side

Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Before servicing components near or affected by the SRS (air bag) system, read and observe all SRS Service Precautions. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), in the Chassis Electrical section. Failure to observe all precautions may result in accidental airbag deployment, personal injury, or death.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.
    NOTE
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

  5. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.

  7. Remove the 2 lower steering wheel covers.
  8.  
  9. Using a Torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx® screws. Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

  11. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    CAUTION
    When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Never disassemble the wheel pad.


    CAUTION
    When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

To install:


WARNING
If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one. When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and is not pinched between other parts.

  1. Connect the airbag connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
  4.  
  5. Using a Torx® socket wrench, tighten the 2 screws to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower steering wheel covers.
  8.  
  9. Check the steering wheel center point.

Passenger's Side

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.

  5. Remove the glove compartment door finish plate inside the instrument panel box.
    WARNING
    When handing the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

  7. Pull up and disconnect the airbag connector.

  9. Remove the instrument panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Installation in the Body Interior section.

  11. Remove the nuts and the front passenger airbag assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screws and the airbag door.
    CAUTION
    Do not store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag deployment direction facing down.


    CAUTION
    Never disassemble the front passenger airbag assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the airbag door and front passenger airbag assembly to the instrument panel.
    CAUTION
    Make sure that no foreign objects are trapped between the airbag bag and the module. Do not damage the strap when installing the module. Make sure the front passenger airbag assembly is installed to the specified torque. If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one. When installing the front passenger airbag assembly, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

  3. Install the instrument panel. Install the 2 bolts to instrument panel reinforcement and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  5. Connect the airbag connector.
  6.  
  7. Put the connector on the glove compartment door finish plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the glove compartment door finish plate to the instrument panel box.
