Accessory Drive Belts

Adjustment



Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the locking bolt, then turn the tension adjusting bolt until proper tension is achieved.
    1. Alternator and A/C compressor drive belt:

      New belt: 143-187 ft. lbs.
       
      Used belt: 66-110 ft. lbs.

    3. Power steering drive belt:
      NOTE
      -New belt- refers to a belt which has been used less than 5 minutes on the running engine. -Used belt- refers to a belt which has been on a running engine for 5 minutes or more.



      New belt: 150-185 ft. lbs.
       
      Used belt: 95-135 ft. lbs.

  3. Tighten the pivot bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the adjusting lock bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

Inspection



Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Visually check the drive belt for cracks, oiliness or wear.
  2.  
  3. Check that the drive belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves.
  4.  
  5. Using a belt tension gauge, check the drive belt tension. Adjust as necessary.
    1. Alternator and A/C compressor drive belt:

      New belt: 143-187 ft. lbs.
       
      Used belt: 66-110 ft. lbs.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. For the alternator and A/C compressor drive belt, loosen the pivot bolt, adjusting lock bolt and adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.

  7. For the power steering pump drive belt, loosen the 2 bolts and remove the drive belt.

To install:

  1. Install the belt and adjust the belt tension.
  2.  
  3. For the alternator and A/C compressor drive belt, tighten the pivot bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm), and the adjusting lock bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. For the power steering pump drive belt, tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
  6.  
  7. After installing the drive belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves.
