Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

Print

NOTE
Inspect and adjust the valve clearance while the engine is cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the right side fender apron seal.
  6.
  7. Drain the engine coolant.
  8.
  9. Remove the V-bank cover.
  10.
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the valve cover.
  12.
  13. Remove the air intake chamber assembly.
  14.
  15. Remove the ignition coils. Make sure to arrange them in the order of removal.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the radiator hose from the water outlet.
  18.
  19. Remove the cylinder head covers. Refer to Valve Covers, Removal & Installation.
  20.
  21. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC by turning the crankshaft pulley and aligning its groove with the timing mark -0- of the No. 1 timing cover. Check that the valve lifters on the No. 1 intake and exhaust are loose. If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark.
  22.
  23. Inspect the valve clearance.
  24.
  25. Remove the adjusting shim:
    1. Turn the camshaft so that the cam lobe for the valve to be adjusted faces up.
    2.
    3. Turn the valve lifter with a screwdriver so that the notches are perpendicular to the camshaft.

    4.
    5. Using a Valve Lifter Press (SST 09248-05510) or equivalent tool, press down the valve lifter and place the Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-06020) or equivalent tool between the camshaft and valve lifter. Remove the Valve Lifter Press.
    6.
    7. Apply the Valve Lifter Stopper at a slight angle on the side marked with -9- or -7- at the position shown in the illustration. When the Valve Lifter Stopper is inserted too deeply, it will get pinched by the shim. To prevent it from being stuck, insert it gently from the intake side, at a slight angle.

    8.
    9. Remove the adjusting shim with a small flat bladed tool and magnetic finger.
    10.

  26.
  27. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following formula, or use the adjusting shim charts.

T = Thickness of the removed shim

    A = Measured valve clearance

N = Thickness of the new shim

    1. Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim. Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within the specified value.

      Intake side (camshaft nearest intake manifold): N = T + (A - 0.008 in. (0.20mm))

      Exhaust side (camshaft nearest exhaust manifold): N = T + (A - 0.012 in. (0.30mm))

    2.

  28.
  29. Install a new adjusting shim:
    1. Select a shim closest to the calculated thickness. Use the lifter depressor tool to press down the lifter and install the shim. Shims are available in 17 sizes from 0.0984-0.1299 inch (2.50mm-3.30mm). The standard increment is 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).
    2.
    3. Place a new adjusting shim on the valve lifter, with the numbers facing down.
    4.
    5. Using the Valve Lifter Press (SST 09248-05510) or equivalent, press down the valve lifter and remove the Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-06020)
    6.

  30.
  31. Recheck the valve clearance.
  32.
  33. Install the cylinder head covers.
  34.
  35. Connect the radiator hose to the water outlet.
  36.
  37. Install the ignition coils. Make sure they are in the exact places where they were removed from.
  38.
  39. Install the air intake chamber assembly.
  40.
  41. Install the V-bank cover.
  42.
  43. Fill the engine coolant system.
  44.
  45. Connect the negative battery cable.
  46.
  47. Start the engine and top off the coolant level.
  48.
  49. Install the right hand fender apron seal.
  50.

    4.
    5. Record the out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim.
    6.
    7. Valve clearance cold should be:

      Intake: 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm)

      Exhaust: 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm)
