Diagnosis & Testing
  1. Inspect the sliding roof switch continuity. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

  3. Inspect the sliding roof motor operation:
    1. Connect the positive lead from the battery to terminal 1 and the negative lead to terminal 3, check that the motor turns clockwise.

    3. Reverse the polarity, check that the motor turns counterclockwise.

  5. Inspect circuit breaker operation:
    1. With the sliding roof in the fully opened position, hold the sliding roof switch in -OPEN- position and check that there is a circuit breaker operation noise within 10 to 60 seconds.

    3. With the sliding roof in the fully opened position, hold the sliding roof switch in -CLOSE- position and check that the sliding roof begins to close within 60 seconds.

    5. If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

  7. Inspect the sliding roof control relay circuit:
    1. Disconnect the connector from the relay and inspect the connector on the wire harness side, as shown in the chart.
      NOTE
      Exceptions: During 60 second after the ignition switch ON - OFF (ACC) or until driver or passenger door is opened after the ignition switch ON - OFF (ACC).

    3. If the circuit is as specified, replace the relay.

  9. Inspect the limit switch continuity:

    1. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

Removal & Installation
Motor

Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    Tape the tip of a screwdriver to use for removing components.

  5. Remove the following components as necessary to remove headliner:

    Front seat
     
    Rear seat cushion and seatback
     
    Front door scuff plate
     
    Rear door scuff plat
     
    Seat belt upper bolt cover
     
    Seatbelt upper bolt
     
    Upper center pillar garnish
     
    Upper center pillar garnish assist grips
     
    Sun visors and holders
     
    Personal light
     
    Room light
     
    High mounted stop light
     
    Package trim tray
     
    Roof side inner garnish
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the roof headliner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glass assembly, if necessary: Remove the garnishes, nuts and shims. Pull the glass upwards to remove it.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sliding roof control relay and drive gear assembly:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and the relay.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 bolts and the drive gear.

To install:

  1. Adjust and install the drive gear assembly:
    1. Remove the screw and cam plate cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the large screw, washers and shims.
    4.  
    5. Turn the halfshaft by screwdriver to align the housing and gear point mark as shown.

    7. Install the cam plate cover with the screw.
    8.  
    9. Install the drive gear and tighten the mounting bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Install the relay.
    12.  
    13. Connect the connectors.

  3. Install the glass assembly, if removed.
  4.  
  5. Install the roof headliner.
  6.  
  7. Install the interior components, in the order removed.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Switch

Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Tape the tip of a screwdriver to use for removing components.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Using a screwdriver, remove the personal light/sliding roof switch assembly, then disconnect the connector.
