Steering Knuckles

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drive shaft lock nut:
    1. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
    2.  
    3. While applying the brakes, remove the nut.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake caliper and disc.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp.

  13. Loosen the 2 nuts on the lower side of the shock absorber. Do not remove at this time.

  15. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end. Using a tie rod end removal tool, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

  17. Remove the lower ball joint bolt and 2 nuts to disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower arm.

  19. Remove the 2 bolts on the lower side of the shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following:
    1. Tighten the shock absorber bolts to 156 ft. lbs. (211 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the ball joint bolt and nuts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the tie rod end nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the ABS speed sensor to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Tighten the drive shaft nut to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Check ABS speed sensor signal.
    12.  
    13. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
