Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock absorber assembly with coil spring out from under the vehicle.

  5. To disassemble the shock absorber from the coil spring, install 2 nuts and a bolt to the bracket at the lower part of the shock absorber and secure it in a vice.
  6.  
  7. Using a special coil spring compressor, such as 09727-30020 or equivalent, compress the coil spring. Do not use an impact wrench; it will damage the compression tool. When holding the shock absorber with the coil spring removed, do not hold it by the spring lower seat. Also, do not knock the spring lower seat.

  9. Using SST 09729-22031 or equivalent tool to hold the suspension support, remove the nut.

  11. Remove the following components from the shock absorber:

    Suspension support
     
    Bearing
     
    Spring upper seat
     
    Upper insulator
     
    Coil spring

To install:

  1. Install the lower insulator.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring bumper to the piston rod.
  4.  
  5. Using the compressor tool, such as 09727-30020 or equivalent, compress the coil spring. Install the coil spring to the shock absorber. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the spring seat of the shock absorber.

  7. Install the spring upper seat and insulator:
    1. Align the -OUT- mark of spring upper seat with the mark of the upper insulator.
    2.  
    3. Install the spring upper seat with upper insulator to the shock absorber with the mark facing the outside of the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Install the bearing and suspension support.
    6.  
    7. Using the retaining tool, such as 09729-22031 or equivalent to hold the suspension support, install a new nut. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Remove the compression tool. Check that the bearing fits into the recess in the suspension support.

  9. Install the coil and shock absorber assembly into the vehicle.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flexible hose and ABS speed sensor wire harness and clamp from shock absorber. Remove the bolt, flexible hose bracket and ABS wire harness clamp.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the shock absorber from steering knuckle:
    1. Remove the 2 nuts and bolts on the lower side of the shock absorber.
    2.  
    3. Remove the shock absorber from the steering knuckle.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 nuts, suspension support No. 2 and shock absorber with the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following:
    1. Tighten the shock absorber nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Rotate the suspension support and set it in the direction, as shown.

    3. Tighten the 2 nuts and bolts on the lower side of the shock absorber to 156 ft. lbs. (211 Nm). Coat the nut-s threads with engine oil.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the ABS wire to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm) and the flexible hose to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Check the front wheel alignment, and adjust as necessary.
