Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance:
    1. Temporarily install the hub nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the hole plug.
    4.  
    5. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.

    7. Return the adjuster 8 notches.

    9. Install the hole plug.

  3. Settling the parking brake shoes and disc:
    1. Depress the parking brake pedal with 33 ft. lbs (147 N).
    2.  
    3. Drive the vehicle at about 31 mph (50 km/h) on a safe, level and dry road.
    4.  
    5. Drive the vehicle for about 0.25 mile (400 meters) in this condition.
    6.  
    7. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times.

  5. Recheck and adjust parking brake pedal travel. Refer to Parking Brake Cables, Adjustment.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Avalon 1995-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.

  7. Remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the disc brake assembly. Suspend the disc brake securely. Ensure that the hose is not stretched.

  9. Remove the disc. If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns freely.

  11. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the shoe return springs.

  13. Slide out the front shoe and remove the shoe adjuster.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shoe strut with the spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shoe hold-down spring cups, spring and pin.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the tension spring and remove the front shoe.
  20.  
  21. Slide out the rear shoe.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tension spring from the rear shoe.
  24.  
  25. Remove the shoe hold-down spring cups, springs and pins.
  26.  
  27. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the disc brake assembly mounting bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
