Batteries produce explosive gases. Batteries contain corrosive acid. Batteries supply levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. Always shield your eyes, avoid leaning over the battery whenever possible, do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks, and do not allow battery acid to contact the eyes or the skin. If battery acid skin contact occurs, flush any contacted areas with water immediately and thoroughly, and get medical help.

Be sure to disconnect the battery cable from the negative (-) terminal of the battery.

The ignition must be in the off position and all electrical loads must be turned off before servicing any electrical component. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle.

This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment and personal injury. If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system, and observe all SRS system precautions. Refer to Airbag (Supplemental Restraint System) in the Chassis Electrical section.

Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness connectors.

When working near the Air Bag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Air Bag System sensors with the ignition ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing serious injury.

When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the ignition OFF, disconnect thebattery, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service.

When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury.

The electronic parts used in the computer, relays, etc. are readily damaged by heat. If there is a need for service operations that may cause excessive temperatures, remove the electronic parts beforehand.

When prying with a flat-up screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape, and apply protective tape around the related parts, to prevent damage.

Handle sensors and relays carefully. Be careful not to drop them against other parts. Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection.

Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

Disconnecting the negative battery cable on some vehicles may interfere with the functions of the on board computer system. The computer may undergo a relearning process once the negative battery cable is reconnected.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage many solid-state electrical components. ESD susceptible components may or may not be labeled with the ESD symbol. Handle all electrical components carefully.

Use the following precautions in order to avoid ESD damage:

Touch a metal ground point in order to remove your body's static charge before servicing any electronic component; especially after sliding across the vehicle seat.
Do not touch exposed terminals. Terminals may connect to circuits susceptible the ESD damage.
Do not allow tools to contact exposed terminals when servicing connectors.
Do not remove components from their protective packaging until required to do so.
Avoid jumpering or grounding of the components or connectors unless required by the diagnostic procedure.
Avoid connecting test equipment probes to components or connectors unless required by the diagnostic procedure. Connect the ground lead first when using test probes.
Ground the protective packaging of any component before opening. Do not rest solid-state components on metal workbenches, or on top of TVs, radios, or other electrical devices.
