Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Before servicing components near or affected by the SRS (air bag) system, read and observe all SRS Service Precautions. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), in the Chassis Electrical section. Failure to observe all precautions may result in accidental airbag deployment, personal injury, or death.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel pad. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), Driver-s Air Bag Removal & Installation, in the Chassis Electrical section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel:
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering wheel set nut.

    5. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.

    7. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the wheel.

      Fig. Place a steering wheel puller on the end of the shaft and tighten to extract the wheel

      Fig. Disconnect any wiring from the combination switch etc . . .

To install:

  1. Center the spiral cable:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the red mark. The cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of the center.

  3. Install the steering wheel:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft assembly.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the wheel set nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  5. Install the steering wheel pad.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Check the steering wheel center point.
  10.  
  11. Reset the radio and clock.
