Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Front Wheel
  1. Open the hood.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor cable connector (2) from the wiring harness connector (3) on top of the frame rail (1) to the inside of the strut tower.

  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the grommet (1) from the hole in the body (7) and pull the wheel speed sensor cable out of the hole.

  9. Remove the speed sensor cable routing clip (2) from the outside frame rail (6).
  10.  
  11. Remove the screw fastening the cable routing clamp (3) to the outside frame rail (6).
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw (1) securing the wheel speed sensor routing bracket (2) to the brake flex hose bracket (5).

  15. Remove the mounting screw (2) fastening the wheel speed sensor head (3) to the knuckle (4). Pull the sensor head out of the knuckle.
    NOTE
    In the following step, the routing clip can be easily removed without damaging it by rotating it (with entire sensor) counterclockwise.

  17. Remove the routing clip (1) securing wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle (4). Remove the sensor from the vehicle.

To install:


CAUTION
Failure to install speed sensor cables properly may result in contact with moving parts or an over extension of cables causing an open circuit. Be sure that cables are installed, routed, and clipped properly.

  1. Install the wheel speed sensor head into the knuckle. Install the mounting screw and tighten it to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the routing clip securing the wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Position the wheel speed sensor routing bracket on the brake flex hose bracket and install the mounting screw. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Position the wheel speed sensor cable routing clamp on the outside frame rail and install the mounting screw. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the speed sensor cable routing clip on the outside frame rail.
  10.  
  11. Insert the wheel speed sensor cable through the hole in the body and install the grommet in the hole.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the wheel speed sensor cable connector to the wiring harness connector on top of the frame rail.
  16.  
  17. Perform the Diagnostic Verification Test and clear any faults.

Rear Wheel
All Wheel Drive

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Move aside the luggage compartment carpet as necessary to access the wheel speed sensor cable connector.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor cable connector (1) at the body wiring harness connector (2).

  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel mounting nuts, then the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the grommet (2) from the hole in the body (1) and pull the wheel speed sensor cable out through the hole.

  11. Remove the speed sensor cable routing clip (3) from the outside frame rail.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw (4) fastening the cable routing clamp (5) to the rear suspension crossmember (6).
  14.  
  15. Remove the speed sensor cable routing clips (4) from the trailing link.

  17. Remove the screw fastening the cable routing clamp to the trailing link.
  18.  
  19. Unclip the wheel speed sensor head (1) from the spring-loaded retainer on the rear of the hub and bearing (2). Remove the sensor from the vehicle.

To install:


CAUTION
Failure to install speed sensor cables properly may result in contact with moving parts or an over extension of cables causing an open circuit. Be sure that cables are installed, routed, and clipped properly.


NOTE
When installing the sensor head to the spring-loaded retainer on the hub and bearing, make sure the head is held snug in the retainer. If there is any play, the clip is deformed and the hub and bearing must be replaced. The retainer is not serviced separately.

  1. Clip the wheel speed sensor head (flat side to bearing rear face) into the spring-loaded retainer on the rear of the hub and bearing.
  2.  
  3. Position the wheel speed sensor on the trailing link and install the screw securing it in place. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the wheel speed sensor and install the routing clips fastening the sensor to the trailing link.
  6.  
  7. Position the wheel speed sensor cable routing clamp on the rear suspension crossmember and install the mounting screw. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the speed sensor cable routing clip on the outside frame rail.
  10.  
  11. Insert the wheel speed sensor cable through the hole in the body and install the grommet in the hole.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the wheel speed sensor cable connector to the body wiring harness connector.
  18.  
  19. Reposition the luggage compartment carpet as necessary.
  20.  
  21. Perform the Diagnostic Verification Test and clear any faults.

Front Wheel Drive Models

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Move aside the luggage compartment carpet as necessary to access the wheel speed sensor cable connector.

  13. Remove the screw (4) fastening the cable routing clamp (5) to the rear suspension crossmember (6).

  15. Remove the speed sensor cable routing clips (4) from the trailing link.

  17. Remove the screw fastening the cable routing clamp to the trailing link.
  18.  
  19. Remove the screw (1) fastening the wheel speed sensor (2) head in the rear of the hub and bearing.

  21. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel speed sensor head into the rear of the hub and bearing.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel speed sensor head mounting screw. Tighten the screw to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the wheel speed sensor on the trailing link and install the screw securing it in place. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Position the wheel speed sensor and install the routing clips fastening the sensor to the trailing link.
  8.  
  9. Position the wheel speed sensor cable routing clamp on the rear suspension crossmember and install the mounting screw. Tighten the mounting screw to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the speed sensor cable routing clip on the outside frame rail.
  12.  
  13. Insert the wheel speed sensor cable through the hole in the body and install the grommet in the hole.
  14.  
  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the wheel speed sensor cable connector to the body wiring harness connector.
  20.  
  21. Reposition the luggage compartment carpet as necessary.
  22.  
  23. Perform the Diagnostic Verification Test and clear any faults.
