NOTE
If transaxle assembly is being replaced or overhauled (clutch and/or seal replacement), it is necessary to perform the TCM Quick Learn Procedure.

  1. Disconnect battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove dipstick tube. Plug hole to prevent debris from entering transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Using Disconnect Release Tool 8875A, disconnect the transmission cooler line quick-connect fittings.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the transaxle electrical connector at the powertrain control module.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect shift cable from manual valve lever and bracket.
    1. Place transaxle in PARK.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect battery negative cable at left strut tower.
    4.  
    5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
    6.  
    7. Using a pry tool, pry up on cable (1) at manual valve lever (3) and remove cable from lever.

    9. Remove the gearshift knob set screw (2) and knob (1).

    11. Remove gearshift bezel (2).

  15. Disconnect range indicator lamp connector (3).
    1. Remove center console assembly (1).

    3. Loosen nut on shift cable adjust lever (1).

    5. Using a flat blade pry tool, remove the shifter cable core end from the shift lever pin.

    7. Using a flat blade pry tool, pry the cable conduit clip up from the shifter bracket. Pull up on the cable conduit and remove from bracket.

    9. Raise vehicle on hoist.
    10.  
    11. Remove the cable grommet (3) from the floor pan area.

    13. Carefully remove the cable (1) from the underbody by unfolding the cable retainer clip (2) as you go along.

  17. Disconnect Crankshaft Position Sensor (if equipped).
  18.  
  19. Remove throttle body support bracket.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect Oxygen Sensor harness retainer from transaxle case.
  22.  
  23. Remove rear mount bracket-to-transaxle case bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove starter upper bracket-to-block bolt.
  26.  
  27. Raise vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Remove side and lower shields.
    NOTE
    Driver side splash shield is a two piece assembly to enable easy access for battery removal.

    1. Remove both front wheels.
    2.  
    3. Remove push pins (3).

    5. Remove fasteners (2).

    7. Remove splash shields from wheel wells.

  31. Remove halfshafts.

  33. Remove exhaust on 2.7L engines.

  35. Remove rear mount bracket lower bolt.
  36.  
  37. Remove rear mount through-bolt.
  38.  
  39. Remove rear mount-to-cross member bolts.
  40.  
  41. Remove rear mount and bracket.
  42.  
  43. Support engine/transaxle with screw jack and wood block on engine oil pan.
  44.  
  45. Remove front mount through-bolt.
  46.  
  47. Remove crossmember bolts and remove the crossmember.
    1. If equipped, remove the two front crossmember bolts (1).

    3. Remove the four crossmember bolts (1) in the rear of the fore/aft crossmember.

    5. Remove the engine roll mount (2) through bolt (1) and remove the fore/aft crossmember.

  49. Remove front mount bracket to block and transaxle.

  51. Remove front mount bracket and mount.

  53. Remove starter.

  55. Remove converter dust shield.
  56.  
  57. Remove torque converter bolts.
  58.  
  59. Remove left mount bracket-to-transaxle bolts.
  60.  
  61. Carefully lower engine/transaxle assembly to gain access to and remove transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  62.  
  63. With aid of helper or transmission jack, remove transaxle assembly from vehicle.
  64.  

To install:

  1. Install transaxle to engine. Install and transaxle-to-engine bolts and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install upper mount to transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Raise engine/transaxle assembly into position, install through bolt at rear mount and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove transmission jack and screw jack.
  8.  
  9. Install torque converter bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install torque converter dust shield.
  12.  
  13. Install starter motor assembly and lower bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install crossmember assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install rear mount/bracket assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install halfshafts.
  20.  
  21. Lower vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Install starter upper bracket-to-block bolt.
  24.  
  25. Install throttle body support bracket (if equipped).
  26.  
  27. Connect crankshaft position sensor connector (if equipped with 2.7L).
  28.  
  29. Connect gearshift cable to manual valve lever.
  30.  
  31. Connect the powertrain control module electrical connector.
  32.  
  33. Connect oil cooler lines to the transaxle. Verify connection by pulling outward.
  34.  
  35. Install dipstick tube.
  36.  
  37. Install air cleaner assembly.
  38.  
  39. Install splash shields.
  40.  
  41. Connect battery negative cable.
  42.
