Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

Accessory drive belt tension for all engines is maintained by a non-adjustable automatic drive belt tensioner.

Belt Routings

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

The accessory drive belt for all engines is a Poly-V type belt. The accessory drive belt for the 2.4L, 3.5L engines drive the alternator, A/C compressor, and power steering pump. On the 2.7L engine, the accessory drive belt drives the alternator and A/C compressor. The power steering pump is driven by a separate stretch-to-fit drive belt.

Inspection

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

When diagnosing accessory drive belts, small cracks that run across ribbed surface of belt from rib to rib, are considered normal. These are not a reason to replace belt. However, cracks running along a rib (not across) are not normal. Any belt with cracks running along a rib must be replaced. Also replace belt if it has excessive wear, frayed cords or severe glazing.

Removal & Installation

2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner (8) counterclockwise until accessory drive belt (2) can be removed from pulleys (5 and 9).
  2.

To install:

NOTE
When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves.

  1. Install the accessory drive belt (2) around all the pulleys except for the alternator pulley (3).
  2.
  3. Using a wrench, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner (8) counterclockwise until accessory drive belt (2) can be installed on the alternator pulley (3). Release spring tension onto accessory drive belt (2).
  4.

2.7L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2.
  3. Remove right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4.
  5. Using a suitable tool, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise.
  6.
  7. Rotate tensioner arm counterclockwise to allow enough slack to remove accessory drive belt.

  8.

To install:

  1. Install the accessory drive belt around all the pulleys except for the alternator pulley.
  2.
  3. Using a suitable tool, rotate accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise until accessory drive belt can be installed on the alternator pulley. Release spring tension onto accessory drive belt.
  4.
  5. Install belt splash shield and right front wheel.
  6.
  7. Lower vehicle.
  8.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

CAUTION
Do not let tensioner arm snap back to the freearm position, severe damage may occur to the tensioner.

Belt tension is not adjustable. Belt adjustment is maintained by an automatic, spring loaded belt tensioner.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
  2.
  3. Rotate belt tensioner clockwise until it contacts it's stop.
  4.
  5. Remove belt, then slowly rotate the tensioner into the freearm position.

  6.

To install:

  1. Check condition of all pulleys.
    CAUTION
When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt MUST be routed correctly. If not, the engine may overheat due to the water pump rotating in the wrong direction.

  2.
  3. Install new belt. Route the belt around all pulleys except the idler pulley. Rotate the tensioner arm until it contacts it's stop position. Route the belt around the idler and slowly let the tensioner rotate into the belt. Make sure the belt is seated onto all pulleys.
  4.

On all engines, the tensioner (5) is equipped with an indexing tang on back of tensioner and an indexing stop on tensioner housing. If a new belt is being installed, tang must be within approximately 0.24-0.32 inches (6-8 mm) of indexing stop (i.e. tang is approximately between the two indexing stops). Belt is considered new if it has been used 15 minutes or less.

  1. With the drive belt installed, inspect the belt wear indicator.
