Removal & Installation



2.7L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Release fuel pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove both front wheels.
  8.  
  9. Discharge A/C system using a suitable refrigerant recovery machine.
  10.  
  11. Remove throttle body air inlet hose (1) and air cleaner housing assembly.

    1. Disconnect inlet air temperature sensor electrical connector.

    3. Disconnect fresh air makeup hose from throttle body air inlet hose.

    5. Loosen clamp at throttle body.

    7. Remove hose from throttle body.

    9. Remove nut on bracket that holds air cleaner housing.
    10.  
    11. Pull air cleaner housing straight up off of locating pins.

  13. Remove left and right splash shields (2).

  17. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at radiator.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transaxle oil cooler lines. Plug lines and fittings to prevent debris from entering transaxle or cooler circuit.

  21. Disconnect transmission electrical harness connectors.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect transmission shift cable.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect A/C lines (1) at condenser.

  27. Disconnect the hose from the engine to the coolant recovery container (2).

  29. Remove cooling module (fan, radiator, A/C condenser).
  30.  
  31. Remove fasteners attaching ABS brake module to lower radiator crossmember. Support module with a suitable retaining strap.

  33. Disconnect engine electrical harness from PCM and bulkhead connectors.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect brake line from retaining clips that attach to lower radiator crossmember.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect hose from the radiator to the coolant recovery container (3).
  38.  
  39. Remove the propeller shaft to PTU fasteners (2), (if equipped).

  41. Remove both axle shafts.

  53. Remove power steering pump and bracket (1) as an assembly. Do not disconnect power steering lines from pump. Reposition pump and support with suitable retaining strap.

  55. Disconnect heater return hose from pipe connection at right front frame rail area.

  57. Disconnect A/C compressor electrical connector (1).

  59. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts (2). Reposition A/C compressor (1) and support with suitable retaining strap. Alternator can be removed with engine assembly.

    1. Remove transaxle torque converter housing cover.

    3. Mark flex plate to torque converter position. Remove torque converter bolts.

  69. Disconnect positive cable from battery and TIPM.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect ground cable from left side transaxle mount bracket.

  73. Disconnect ETC connector (2) from throttle body.

  79. Disconnect brake booster and vapor purge vacuum hoses.

  81. Disconnect all ground straps attaching to engine.

  83. Position vehicle height to allow engine dolly 6135 (2) and cradle 6710 (3) with posts 6848 to be installed under vehicle.

  85. Loosen cradle engine mounts to allow movement for positioning onto engine locating holes on the engine block, compressor mount bracket and oil pan rail. Lower vehicle and position cradle until the engine is resting on posts. Tighten post mounts to cradle frame to prevent movement when removing or installing engine/transaxle assembly. Secure engine/transaxle assembly to dolly/cradle with safety straps (1).

  87. Lower vehicle so weight of the engine and transmission ONLY is on the cradle (2).

  89. Remove right and left side engine mount bolts.
  90.  
  91. Slowly raise vehicle in short length spans. Inspect at each interval for potential engine or transaxle contact to vehicle components. Move the cradle/dolly fixture as necessary to allow for removal clearance.

To install:

  1. Position engine/transaxle assembly under vehicle and slowly lower vehicle in short length spans. Inspect at each interval for potential engine or transaxle contact to vehicle components. Move the cradle/dolly fixture as necessary to allow for installation clearance.
  2.  
  3. Continue lowering vehicle until right side engine mount and left side transaxle mount align to their mounting locations. Install mounting bolts and torque to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove safety straps from engine/transaxle assembly. Slowly raise vehicle enough to remove the engine dolly and cradle.
  6.  
  7. Connect brake booster and vapor purge vacuum hoses.
  8.  
  9. Connect fuel line.
  10.  
  11. Connect ETC wiring to throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Connect ground strap to right shock tower.
  14.  
  15. Connect heater hose to coolant outlet connector.
  16.  
  17. Connect coolant recovery container hose to radiator.
  18.  
  19. Connect ground cable to left side transaxle mount bracket.
  20.  
  21. Connect positive cable to battery and TIPM.
  22.  
  23. Install rear engine mount and transaxle bracket.
  24.  
  25. Install torque converter bolts.
  26.  
  27. Install torque converter housing cover.
  28.  
  29. Reattach all ground straps to engine.
  30.  
  31. Install exhaust cross-under pipe.
  32.  
  33. Install structural collar.
  34.  
  35. Install A/C compressor to bracket.
  36.  
  37. Connect A/C compressor clutch electrical connector.
  38.  
  39. Connect heater return hose to pipe connection at right front frame rail area.
  40.  
  41. Install power steering pump and bracket assembly.
  42.  
  43. Install accessory drive belts.
  44.  
  45. Install power steering belt.
  46.  
  47. Install front engine mount and lower radiator crossmember.
  48.  
  49. Install front engine mount through bolt.
  50.  
  51. Connect the propeller shaft to the PTU, (if equipped).
  52.  
  53. Install both axle shafts.
  54.  
  55. Connect brake line to retaining clips that attach to lower radiator crossmember.
  56.  
  57. Install fasteners attaching ABS module to lower radiator crossmember.
  58.  
  59. Connect engine electrical harness to PCM and bulkhead connectors.
  60.  
  61. Connect transmission shift cable.
  62.  
  63. Connect transmission electrical harness connectors.
  64.  
  65. Connect transmission oil cooler lines.
  66.  
  67. Install cooling module (fan, radiator, A/C condenser). Connect A/C lines to condenser.

  69. Connect upper and lower radiator hoses to radiator.
  70.  
  71. Ensure oil pan drain plug is tight. Install new oil filter.
  72.  
  73. Install front fascia closeout and lower air shield to lower radiator crossmember.
  74.  
  75. Install left and right splash shields.
  76.  
  77. Install both front wheels.
  78.  
  79. Fill engine crankcase with proper oil to correct level.
  80.  
  81. Evacuate and recharge Air Conditioning system.
  82.  
  83. Install throttle body air inlet hose and air cleaner housing assembly.
  84.  
  85. Fill cooling system.
  86.  
  87. Connect negative battery cable.
  88.  
  89. Start engine and run until operating temperature is reached.
