Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, remove the hub nut (1) from the axle halfshaft (2).

  7. Access and remove the front brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the routing clip (1) securing wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle (4).

  11. Remove the screw (2) fastening the wheel speed sensor head (3) to the knuckle (4). Pull the sensor head out of the knuckle.

  13. Remove the nut (4) attaching the lower ball joint to the lower control arm (5).

  15. Release the lower ball joint (5) from the lower control arm (1) using Remover (2), Special Tool 9360. Do not lift the knuckle out of the lower control arm at this time.

  17. Lift the knuckle (2) out of the lower control arm (5).
    NOTE
    Do not allow the halfshaft (1) to hang by the inner C/V joint; it must be supported to keep the joint from separating during this operation.

  19. Pull the knuckle (2) off the axle halfshaft (1) outer C/V joint splines and support the halfshaft.

  21. Through the access hole (1) in the knuckle, tap the ends of the snap-ring (2) with a drift punch and remove it from the ball joint.

  23. Install Remover (2), Special Tool 9964-3, and Remover (4), Special Tool 9964-4 on Remover/Installer (5), Special Tool 8441-1. Place the tools over the ball joint (3), then hand tighten the screw-drive.

  25. Using hand-tools, tighten the screw-drive forcing the ball joint (3) out of the knuckle (1).

  27. Loosen the screw-drive and remove the tools and ball joint.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install Installer (2), Special Tool 9964-1, and Installer (4), Special Tool 9964-2 on Remover/Installer (5), Special Tool 8441-1. Place a new ball joint (stem down) into Installer 9964-2.
  2.  
  3. Position the assembly onto the knuckle, then hand tighten the screw-drive.
  4.  
  5. Using hand-tools, tighten the screw-drive forcing the ball joint into the knuckle. Continue to install the ball joint until the flange on the ball joint comes to a stop against the bottom of the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the screw-drive and remove the tools.
  8.  
  9. Install a NEW snap-ring into the groove in the ball joint using a drift punch.
  10.  
  11. Slide the hub and bearing in the knuckle onto the splines of the halfshaft outer C/V joint.
  12.  
  13. Insert the lower ball joint stud into the mounting hole in the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Install a NEW ball joint stud nut. Tighten the nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel speed sensor head into the knuckle. Install the mounting screw and tighten it to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the routing clip securing the wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter.
  22.  
  23. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the halfshaft outer C/V joint.
  24.  
  25. Install the hub nut on the end of the halfshaft and snug it.
  26.  
  27. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, tighten the hub nut to 97 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Perform wheel alignment as necessary.
