Ignition Switch

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Ignition switch location.

  5. Remove radio bezel.
    1. Remove the center console bezel.
      NOTE
      Remove center bezel for Avenger:

    3. Remove the center console bezel.

    5. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out on the center bezel.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the HVAC control head connector and the ASBM connector and remove from the instrument panel.
      NOTE
      Remove center bezel for Sebring:

    9. Using trim stick or equivalent, pry up on bezel.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect wire connectors.
    12.  
    13. Remove bezel from instrument panel.

    15. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out on the center bezel.

    17. Disconnect the HVAC control head connector and the ASBM connector and remove from the instrument panel.

  7. Remove instrument cluster bezel.
    NOTE
    Remove cluster bezel for Avenger:

    1. Position the column tilt at the full-upward position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering column opening cover
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement mounting screws (2).

    7. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement (1).
    8.  
    9. Position the column tilt at the full-downward position. Leave the tilt lever (2) in the released position.

    11. Remove the screws (1) attaching the lower shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

    13. Remove the lower shroud.
      NOTE
      The gap hider on the upper shroud is attached to the instrument cluster (1) by four retaining tabs (2) along the top and two along the sides (one each side). These tabs can be easily released by hand in the following step. Do not use a tool that could damage the gap hider.

    15. Pull the column outward to the full-extended position.

    17. Reach up behind the shroud gap hider (1) and release the two side and four upper tabs retaining the shroud gap hider to the instrument cluster (2).

    19. Remove the upper shroud from the column.
    20.  
    21. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out cluster bezel.

    23. Using a trim stick or equivalent, pry off the rubber tilt column hider/filler.
      NOTE
      Remove cluster bezel for Sebring:

    25. Position the column tilt at the full-upward position.

    27. Remove the steering column opening cover

    29. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement mounting screws (2).

    31. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement (1).

    33. Position the column tilt at the full-downward position. Leave the tilt lever (2) in the released position.

    35. Remove the screws (1) attaching the lower shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

    37. Remove the lower shroud.
      NOTE
      The gap hider on the upper shroud is attached to the instrument cluster (1) by four retaining tabs (2) along the top and two along the sides (one each side). These tabs can be easily released by hand in the following step. Do not use a tool that could damage the gap hider.

    39. Pull the column outward to the full-extended position.

    43. Remove the upper shroud from the column.

    45. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out cluster bezel.

  9. Remove the knee bolster.
    1. Remove four screws (1) fastening knee bolster to instrument panel.

    3. Remove knee bolster from instrument panel.

  11. Disconnect two electrical connectors from the back of instrument cluster.

  13. Relocate instrument cluster to the left.

  15. Remove the two front mounting screws for ignition switch.

  17. Remove one rear mounting screw and washer from ignition switch.

  19. Use a thin screwdriver and unclip ignition switch from mounting position. Push switch back to remove.

  21. Push switch back and down to opening from knee bolster area.

  23. Disconnect shift interlock cable.
    1. Place ignition key in the ACC position.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect shift interlock cable from ignition cylinder.

    5. Disconnect shift interlock cable (3, 4) from shift mechanism. Release retention tab using suitable screwdriver.

  25. Remove ignition switch assembly.

To install:

  1. Install shift interlock cable to ignition switch.
  2.  
  3. Push ignition switch up into connect electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Install location t on ignition switch into slot on instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Pull ignition switch into place.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that location pins are in place.
  10.  
  11. Install two front mounting screws and tighten.
  12.  
  13. Rear mounting screw and washer.
  14.  
  15. Install rear mounting screw and washer and tighten.
  16.  
  17. Connect two electrical connectors to the back of the instrument cluster.
  18.  
  19. Relocate instrument cluster and install.
  20.  
  21. Install instrument cluster bezel.
  22.  
  23. Install radio bezel.
  24.  
  25. Connect negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Adjust shift interlock if necessary.
