Removal & Installation




NOTE
Differences in this procedure between Avenger and Sebring will begin with a


NOTE
indicating which vehicle.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative remote cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver and passenger seats.
  4.  
  5. Remove center bezel.
    NOTE
    Remove center bezel for Avenger:

    1. Remove the center console bezel.

    3. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out on the center bezel.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the HVAC control head connector and the ASBM connector and remove from the instrument panel.
      NOTE
      Remove center bezel for Sebring:

    7. Using trim stick or equivalent, pry up on bezel.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect wire connectors.
    10.  
    11. Remove bezel from instrument panel.

  7. Remove center console.

    1. Remove shift knob and shift bezel.
    2.  
    3. Remove two screws (8) in the front of the console.
    4.  
    5. Remove four screws (5) inside the console compartment.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect console housing wire connector (5) and instrument panel connector (1).
    8.  
    9. Pull parking brake (3) rearward.
    10.  
    11. Remove center console (7) from vehicle.

      Remove center console for Sebring:

    13. Remove console bezel.

    15. Remove shift knob and shift bezel.

    17. Remove two fasteners (6).
    18.  
    19. Remove four fasteners (5)

    21. Disconnect console housing wire connector (7) and instrument panel connector (1).

    23. Pull parking brake rearward.
    24.  
    25. Remove center console from vehicle.

  9. Remove the amplifier if equipped.

  11. Remove left and right lower closeout panels.

  13. Remove the cowl panel and remove from vehicle.

  15. Remove steering column cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove knee bolster panel.
    1. Remove four screws (1) fastening knee bolster to instrument panel.

    3. Remove knee bolster from instrument panel.

  19. Using trim stick C-4755, remove left and right defroster outlets.
  20.  
  21. Using trim stick C-4755, remove center outlets.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect instrument panel wiring harness (2 and 3).

  25. Disconnect antenna wire connectors (2 and 4).

  27. Remove cluster bezel.
    NOTE
    Remove cluster bezel for Avenger:

    1. Position the column tilt at the full-upward position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering column opening cover
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement mounting screws (2).

    7. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement (1).

    9. Position the column tilt at the full-downward position. Leave the tilt lever (2) in the released position.

    11. Remove the screws (1) attaching the lower shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

    13. Remove the lower shroud.
      NOTE
      The gap hider on the upper shroud is attached to the instrument cluster (1) by four retaining tabs (2) along the top and two along the sides (one each side). These tabs can be easily released by hand in the following step. Do not use a tool that could damage the gap hider.

    15. Pull the column outward to the full-extended position.

    17. Reach up behind the shroud gap hider (1) and release the two side and four upper tabs retaining the shroud gap hider to the instrument cluster (2).

    19. Remove the upper shroud from the column.
    20.  
    21. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out cluster bezel.

    23. Using a trim stick or equivalent, pry off the rubber tilt column hider/filler.
      NOTE
      Remove cluster bezel for Sebring:

    25. Position the column tilt at the full-upward position.

    27. Remove the steering column opening cover

    29. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement mounting screws (2).

    31. Remove the steering column cover reinforcement (1).

    33. Position the column tilt at the full-downward position. Leave the tilt lever (2) in the released position.

    35. Remove the screws (1) attaching the lower shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

    37. Remove the lower shroud.
      NOTE
      The gap hider on the upper shroud is attached to the instrument cluster (1) by four retaining tabs (2) along the top and two along the sides (one each side). These tabs can be easily released by hand in the following step. Do not use a tool that could damage the gap hider.

    39. Pull the column outward to the full-extended position.

    43. Remove the upper shroud from the column.

    45. Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry out cluster bezel.

  29. Remove instrument panel cluster, fasteners, and cluster connectors.

  31. Using trim stick C-4755 or equivalent, pry up on speaker grilles (1) and remove from instrument panel.

  33. Remove instrument panel speakers.

  35. Using trim stick C-4755 or equivalent, pry up on bezel, disconnect wire connectors and disengage clips removing radio bezel.

  37. Remove radio.
    1. Remove radio mounting screws and remove the radio.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect wire harness connectors.
      CAUTION
      Pulling the antenna cable straight out of the radio without pulling on the locking antenna connector could damage the cable or radio.

    5. Disconnect the antenna cable by pulling the locking antenna connector away from the radio.
    6.

  39. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry out on the left and right end cover and remove from vehicle.

  41. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry out on the right A-pillar trim and remove from vehicle.

  43. Open the glove box. Pinch in on the sides and drop downward. Remove the glove box dampener. Pull down to disengage hinges and remove from instrument panel.

  45. Reach through glove box opening and disconnect air bag squib connectors (1).

  47. Remove the one left side, center instrument panel support bolt.
  48.  
  49. Remove one bolt to the left side support strut to bulkhead.
  50.  
  51. Disconnect the junction block wiring connectors.

  53. Disconnect all the column wiring and unclip the harness from the steering column.
  54.  
  55. Remove steering column pinch bolt and remove steering column from vehicle.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the transmission shift interlock and wire connector.
  58.  
  59. Remove instrument panel pad.
    CAUTION
    The Instrument Panel Top pad may be hard to unsnap from the instrument panel. Be sure not to mar, scuff, or damage the instrument panel pad.

    1. Pull top cover rearward to disengage hooks holding front of top pad to instrument panel.

    3. Remove top pad from vehicle.
      NOTE
      Left hand shown. Right side similar.

  61. Remove fasteners (1, 2, and 3) attaching instrument panel.

  63. With the help of an assistant, lift up instrument panel and move rearward to remove.
  64.  
  65. If replacing the instrument panel, transfer all non damaged parts and wiring harness to the new instrument panel assembly.

To install:

  1. With the help of an assistant, install the I/P assembly into the vehicle and position onto the alignment pins.
  2.  
  3. Install instrument panel fasteners into driver and passenger sides of vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the fastener along the windshield.
  6.  
  7. Connect the amplifier connectors.
  8.  
  9. Connect instrument panel wiring harness connectors.
  10.  
  11. Snap center outlets into place
  12.  
  13. Install top pad ensuring tabs snap firmly in place.
  14.  
  15. Install defroster grille ensuring tabs snap firmly in place.
  16.  
  17. Install speaker.
  18.  
  19. Install speaker grilles ensuring tabs snap firmly in place.
  20.  
  21. Install passenger side airbag, if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Install A-pillar trim.
    1. Slide tether downward through housing (1) until clip engages (2).

    3. Firmly seat A-pillar trim into position.
    4.

  25. Install left and right end covers.
  26.  
  27. Install knee bolster screws.
  28.  
  29. Install steering column cover.
  30.  
  31. Insert steering wheel and column into steering wheel opening.
  32.  
  33. Install lower coupling steering bolt and install the intermediate shaft.
  34.  
  35. Connect the transmission interlock and wire connector.
  36.  
  37. Install defroster outlets.
  38.  
  39. Connect cluster wire connectors and install screws.
  40.  
  41. Snap cluster bezel into place ensuring proper seat.
  42.  
  43. Snap ignition trim ring bezel firmly into place.
  44.  
  45. Install radio.
  46.  
  47. Connect antenna connectors.
  48.  
  49. Snap radio bezel firmly into place and connect wire connectors.
  50.  
  51. Install glove box.
  52.  
  53. Install center console.
  54.  
  55. Install console bezel.
  56.  
  57. Install left and right lower closeout panels.
  58.  
  59. Install front seats.
