The rear wheel bearing and wheel mounting hub used on this vehicle are a one-piece sealed unit or hub and bearing assembly. It is permanently lubricated when assembled and is sealed for life. There is no periodic lubrication or maintenance recommended for these units.

The hub and bearing is mounted to the rear knuckle.

All vehicles have a magnetic encoder integrated into the right rear hub and bearing for speed sense. Vehicles equipped with antilock brakes have a magnetic encoder integrated into both rear hub and bearings. The encoder works with the rear wheel speed sensors to provide wheel speed signal. The sensor mounts by screw to the rear of the front-wheel-drive hub and bearing while the sensor clips to the rear of the all-wheel-drive hub and bearing.

The only serviceable components of the hub and bearing are the wheel mounting studs pressed into the hub.

Removal & Installation



All Wheel Drive Models

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    The hub nut is a single use type. A new nut is required for reassembly. Do not reuse the hub nut.

  5. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, remove the hub nut (2) from the axle halfshaft (1).

  7. Tap the end of the halfshaft (1) inward, loosening it from the hub and bearing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the disc brake caliper (2) lower guide pin bolt (1).
    CAUTION
    When moving rear brake caliper upward, use extreme care not to damage or overextend the flex hose. Damage may occur.

  11. Rotate the caliper upward hinging off the upper guide pin bolt. Rotate the caliper upward just enough to allow brake rotor removal. Hang the caliper assembly in this position using wire or a bungee cord.

  13. Remove any clips (2) retaining the brake rotor (3) to the wheel mounting studs.

  15. Slide the brake rotor (3) off the hub and bearing (1).
  16.  
  17. Unclip the wheel speed sensor head (1) from the retainer on the rear of the hub and bearing (2).

  19. Remove the four bolts (1) securing the hub and bearing to the knuckle.

  21. Remove the hub and bearing.

To install:

  1. Slide the hub and bearing over the axle halfshaft and position it on the brake support plate and trailing link.
  2.  
  3. Install the four bolts securing the hub and bearing to the knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Clip the wheel speed sensor head (flat side to bearing rear) into the retainer on the rear of the hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. Slide the brake rotor over the parking brake shoes and onto the hub and bearing.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the disc brake caliper downward over the brake rotor and lower part of caliper adapter.
  10.  
  11. Install the disc brake caliper lower guide pin bolt. Tighten the guide pin bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the halfshaft outer C/V joint.
    NOTE
    The hub nut is a single use type. A new nut is required for reassembly. Do not reuse the hub nut.

  15. Install hub nut on the end of the halfshaft and snug it.
  16.  
  17. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, tighten the hub nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install tire and wheel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal before moving it.

Front Wheel Drive Models

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with rear disc brakes, access and remove the rear brake rotor.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with rear drum brakes, access and remove the rear brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screw (1) fastening the wheel speed sensor (2) head in the rear of the hub and bearing.

  11. Remove the four bolts (1) securing the hub and bearing (2) to the knuckle.

  13. Remove the hub and bearing.

To install:


NOTE
If equipped, make sure the wheel speed sensor mount on the rear of the hub and bearing is directed toward the front of the vehicle.

  1. Position the hub and bearing on the brake support plate and knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the four bolts securing the hub and bearing to the knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
    NOTE
    Before installing the wheel speed sensor head into the rear of the hub and bearing, inspect the O-ring seal to make sure it is not dislodged, split, cut or damaged in any way. Replace the O-ring as necessary.

  5. If equipped with a wheel speed sensor, install the wheel speed sensor head into the rear of the hub and bearing.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with a wheel speed sensor, install the wheel speed sensor head mounting screw. Tighten the screw to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If equipped with rear disc brakes, install the brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with rear drum brakes, install the brake drum and adjust as necessary.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal before moving it.
