2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Remove air cleaner box and air tube.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable
  4.  
  5. Remove starter motor mounting bolt.

  7. Disconnect the electrical connector at throttle body.

  9. Remove throttle body bolts and remove throttle body.

  11. Push starter under intake manifold.

  13. Tip starter nose toward cooling module.
  14.  
  15. Pull starter up and out.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect starter motor wiring.

  19. Remove starter motor from vehicle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Connect starter motor wiring. Tighten battery cable nut to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install starter motor into vehicle lower engine compartment.
  4.  
  5. Loose install starter into position.
  6.  
  7. Install throttle body
  8.  
  9. Install throttle body bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install starter motor mounting bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect throttle body electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Install air cleaner box and inlet tube.
  16.  
  17. Connect battery negative cable.
  18.  

2.7L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Sebring 2008-2009

Dodge Avenger 2008-2009

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front mount through bolt (1).

  5. Remove lower engine anti-roll mount bolt (2).

  7. Remove crossmember mounting bolts (1) front.
  8.  
  9. Remove crossmember mounting bolts (1) rear.

  11. Remove crossmember from vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove torque reaction bracket transmission to starter bolt (1).

  15. Remove negative battery cable (2).
  16.  
  17. Remove torque reaction bracket to transmission bolt (4).
  18.  
  19. Remove torque reaction bracket to engine bolt (5).

  21. Remove torque reaction bracket (3) from vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove battery cable nut (1), ignition sense wire (2) and battery cable (3) from solenoid stud.

  25. Disconnect electrical connector (4) from starter solenoid.

  27. Remove starter mounting bolts (1) from transmission housing (2).

  29. Remove starter motor (4) and dust shield (3) from transmission housing (2).

  31. Remove starter motor (4) from vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install starter motor and dust shield to transmission housing.
  2.  
  3. Install starter mounting bolts to transmission housing. Tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install battery cable, ignition sense wire and battery cable nut to solenoid stud. Tighten nut to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect electrical connector to starter solenoid.
  8.  
  9. Install torque reaction bracket to vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install torque reaction bracket to engine bolt. Hand tighten bolt.
  12.  
  13. Install torque reaction bracket to transmission bolt. Hand tighten bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Install torque reaction bracket transmission to starter bolt. Hand tighten bolt.
    CAUTION
    The torque reaction bracket bolts need to be tightened using a mandatory torque sequence. Failure to tighten bolts using the mandatory torque sequence provided may result in damage to the fasteners, bracket, and threaded bolts holes for the engine and transmission.

  19. Tighten bolts in a mandatory torque sequence to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install crossmember to vehicle. Tighten bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install lower engine anti-roll mount bolt and tighten bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install crossmember bolts and tighten bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install mount through bolt and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Connect negative battery cable.
  30.  

3.5L Engines

  1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable at battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove heat shield nuts (1, 3) and position heat shield (2) aside.

  5. Remove belly pan, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove front mount through bolt (1) from transmission bracket (2) and mount (3).

  9. Remove rear bolts (1) from transmission crossmember.

  17. Remove oxygen sensor (2) and position aside.

  19. Remove bolt (2) from transmission bracket (1).

  23. Remove battery cable nut (1), ignition wire (2) and battery cable (3) from starter solenoid stud.

  25. Disconnect electrical connector (4) from starter solenoid.
  26.  
  27. Remove starter mounting bolts (2) and ground wire (1) and remove the starter (4) from the transmission housing (3).

  29. Remove starter motor dust shield (2) from starter (1).

To install:

  1. Install starter motor dust shield to starter.
  2.  
  3. Position starter into transmission housing, install ground wire and starter mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install battery cable, ignition wire and battery cable nut to starter solenoid stud. Tighten nut to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect electrical connector to starter solenoid.
  8.  
  9. Install transmission bracket and bolts to transmission housing. Hand tighten bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install bolt to transmission bracket. Hand tighten bolt.
    CAUTION
    The torque reaction bracket bolts need to be tightened using a mandatory torque sequence. Failure to tighten bolts using the mandatory torque sequence provided may result in damage to the fasteners, bracket, and threaded bolts holes for the engine and transmission.

  13. Tighten bolts in a mandatory torque sequence to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install oxygen sensor and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install heat shield and bolts. Tighten bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install bolts to transmission crossmember. Tighten bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install bolts to transmission crossmember. Tighten bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install front mount through bolt to transmission bracket and mount. Tighten bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  24.  
  25. If equipped, install belly pan.
    NOTE
    Make sure the lower heat shield is installed to the lower stud before the upper heat shield is install. The upper heat shield stacks on top of the lower heat shield, and both shields are held together by the lower nut.

  27. Position heat shield over the studs and install heat shield nuts. Tighten nuts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

  29. Connect negative battery cable.

Solenoid Or Relay Replacement

The starter has an integral starter solenoid. The starter including the solenoid must be serviced as an assembly.

Testing

WARNING
On vehicles equipped with airbags, refer to the passive restraint systems before attempting steering wheel, steering column, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment and possible personal injury.

Before removing any unit from the starting system for repair or diagnosis, perform the following inspections:



Battery: Visually inspect the battery for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded cable connections. Determine the state-of-charge and cranking capacity of the battery. Charge or replace the battery, if required. Refer to the Battery section for more information.
 
Ignition Switch: Visually inspect the ignition switch for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections.
 
Transmission Range Sensor or Park/Neutral Switch: Visually inspect the transmission range sensor for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections.
 
Starter Relay: Visually inspect the starter relay for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections.
 
Starter Motor: Visually inspect the starter motor for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections.
 
Starter Solenoid: Visually inspect the starter solenoid for indications of physical damage and loose or corroded wire harness connections.
 
Wiring: Visually inspect the wire harness for damage. Repair or replace any faulty wiring, as required. Check for loose or corroded wire harness connections at main engine ground and remote jump post.
