Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



2.0L & 2.4L Engines

The timing belt must be removed for this procedure. Use care that all timing marks are aligned after installation or the engine will be damaged.

  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the left shock tower.
    NOTE
    The ground cable is equipped with an insulator grommet which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the seal contact area of the crankshaft.



    Accessory drive belts
     
    Crankshaft damper/pulley using a jaw puller tool
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket using a gear/sprocket puller
     



    Front crankshaft seal using Seal Removal Tool No. 6771
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new oil seal lip with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure the word -FRONT- on the timing belt sprocket is facing outward.


    WARNING
    Operating the engine without the proper amount and type of engine oil will result in severe engine damage.



    New crankshaft oil seal with the spring facing inward using Oil Seal Installer Tool 6780-1, until it is flush with the front cover
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket using Tool No. 6792
     



    Timing belt and timing belt cover
     
    Crankshaft damper/pulley using the thrust bearing/washer and 12M-1.75 x 150mm bolt from special Tool No. 6792. Torque the bolt to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)
     
    Accessory drive belts and adjust the tension
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove crankshaft damper using Special Tool 1026 and Insert 6827
  6.  
  7. Remove outer timing belt cover and timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove crankshaft sprocket using Special Tool 6793 and insert C-4685-C2
    WARNING
    Do not nick shaft seal surface or seal bore

  10.  
  11. Using Special Tool 6771 to remove front crankshaft oil seal
    WARNING
    Do not damage the seal contact area on the crankshaft

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install new seal by using Tool 6780
  2.  
  3. Place seal into opening with seal spring towards the inside of engine.
  4.  
  5. Install seal until flush with cover
  6.  
  7. Install crankshaft sprocket
    NOTE
    Make sure the word "front" on the sprocket is facing you

  8.  
  9. Install timing belt and covers.
  10.  
  11. Install crankshaft damper using thrust bearing/washer and 12M-1.75 x 150 mm bolt from Special Tool 6792.
  12.  
  13. Install crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)
  14.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    The timing belt must be removed for this procedure. Use care that all timing marks are aligned after installation or the engine will be damaged.

  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the left shock tower.
    NOTE
    The ground cable is equipped with an insulator grommet which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be careful not to nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.



    The accessory drive belts
     
    The crankshaft damper using a jaw puller tool
     
    The timing belt
     
    The crankshaft timing belt sprocket using a gear/sprocket puller
     



    The front crankshaft seal using Seal Removal Tool No. 6771
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new oil seal lip with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE

    The crankshaft damper using the thrust bearing/washer and 12M-1.75 x 150mm bolt from special Tool No. 6792. Torque the bolt to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm)

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with the proper amount of clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper.
     
    Timing belt covers and timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt.
     
    Crankshaft sprocket and key.
     

  6.  
  7. Pry out the front seal with a flat tip screwdriver.
    NOTE
    Cover the end of the screwdriver with a shop towel.


    WARNING
    Be careful not to nick or damage crankshaft flange surface or oil pump housing bore.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Front crankshaft seal into oil pump housing using Special Tool MD-998717 or suitable seal driver
     
    Crankshaft key and sprocket
     
    Timing belt and covers. Refer to Timing Belt.
     
    Crankshaft damper and torque the bolt to 143 ft. lbs. (182 Nm)
     

  2.  

The timing belt must be removed for this procedure. Use care to be sure all timing marks are aligned after this service or the engine will be damaged.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the left shock tower.
    NOTE
    The ground cable is equipped with an insulator grommet which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.

  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Be sure to cover the end of the pry tool tip with a shop towel. Be careful not to nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.



    Right inner splash shield
     
    Crankshaft damper/pulley
     
    Timing belt covers and timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket and key
     
    Crankshaft seal by prying it out with a flat-tipped pry tool

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new oil seal lip with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Verify that all timing marks are correctly aligned or the engine will be damaged.


    WARNING
    Operating the engine without the proper amount and type of engine oil will result in severe engine damage.



    New crankshaft oil seal until it is flush with the oil pump cover, using Oil Seal Installer MD998717
     
    Crankshaft timing belt sprocket and key
     
    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     



    Crankshaft damper/pulley and torque the bolt to 134 ft. lbs. (182 Nm)
     
    Right inner splash shield
     
    Accessory drive belts and adjust the tension
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Front crankshaft seal with Special Tool 6771

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal with Special Tools 6780-2, 8179 and 6780-1
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The Crankshaft damper
     
    The front crankshaft seal with Special Tool 6771

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The new seal with Special Tools 6780-2, 8179 and 6780-1
     
    The Crankshaft damper
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from remote negative terminal on shock tower and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper
     
    Timing belt covers and timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Crankshaft sensing blade
     
    Sensing blade spacer
     
    Woodruff key
     

  6.  
  7. Pry out the front seal with a flat tip screwdriver.
    NOTE
    Cover the end of the screwdriver with a shop towel.


    WARNING
    Be careful not to nick or damage crankshaft flange surface or oil pump housing bore.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Front crankshaft seal into oil pump housing using Special Tool MD-998717 or suitable seal driver
     
    Woodruff key
     
    Sensing blade spacer
     
    Crankshaft sensing blade
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt and covers. Refer to Timing Belt.
     
    Crankshaft damper and torque the bolt to 137 ft. lbs. (185 Nm)
