Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The ground cable is equipped with an insulator grommet which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.


    NOTE
    Before removing the front suspension crossmember from the vehicle scribe the front suspension crossmember and the vehicle body. This must be done to retain the proper alignment. The caster and camber are not adjustable.

    Intermediate shaft coupler pin bolt retaining pin
     
    Intermediate shaft coupler pin bolt
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends by holding the tie rod end stud with a 11 / 32 inch socket and loosen the retaining nut
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Scribe a line on the body and on the crossmember on all 4 sides.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Stabilizer
     
    3 anti-lock brake controller-to-crossmember bolts and secure it to the chassis, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
     
    Strut clevis from the lower control arm
     
    Both engine support bracket-to-crossmember bolts
     
    Engine support bracket-to-transaxle mounting bracket bolt
     

  8.  
  9. Place a lifting device under the front suspension crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    8 crossmember-to-chassis bolts
     

  12.  
  13. Lower the lifting device enough to gain access to the steering rack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering lines and drain the fluid
     
    Power steering pressure switch electrical connector
     
    Solenoid control module electrical connector, if equipped with speed proportional steering
     
    Both steering rack isolator bolts
     
    Both steering rack saddle bracket bolts

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering rack
     
    Isolator and saddle bracket and torque the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    Power steering pressure and return lines and torque the lines to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm)
     
    Crossmember, install the rear bolts first and torque the bolts to 20 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Using a soft faced hammer tap the crossmember into position.
    NOTE
    Be sure to align the scribed marks on the crossmember.

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Crossmember, starting with the rear bolts and torque the bolts to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm)
     
    Both engine support bracket to crossmember bolts
     
    Engine support bracket to transaxle bracket bolt and torque the 3 bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Power steering pressure switch
     
    ABS control unit and torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Heat shield on the tie rod ends
     
    Shock clevis to the lower control arm
     
    Tie rod ends and torque the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
     
    Both stabilizer clamps
     
    Strut clevis bolt and torque the bolt to 68 ft. lbs. (92 Nm)
     
    Wheels and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm)
     
    Intermediate shaft pin bolt and retaining pin and torque the pin bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the power steering system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes.
  10.  
  11. Shut OFF the engine and check the power steering fluid.
  12.  
  13. Add power steering fluid if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Raise the front wheels off the ground.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and turn the wheel from stop-to-stop to bleed any air from the system.
  18.  
  19. Check the fluid level and add, if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Check and adjust the alignment.
  22.
