Inspection



Remove the camshaft and measure the outer diameter of each journal at the five different places to check the abrasion of each camshaft journal. If any part is outside of the specifications, the camshaft must be replaced.

Removal & Installation



  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Timing belt
     

  4.  
  5. While holding the intake camshaft firmly in place, remove the intake camshaft gear bolt and gear.
  6.  
  7. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly in place, remove the exhaust camshaft gear bolt and gear.
    NOTE
    Mark the camshaft cap positions for installation reference.

  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft cap bolts gradually in the sequence shown. See Figures 9 or 10.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust and intake camshafts

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the camshaft caps with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake/exhaust camshaft caps in their original positions, and tighten the cap bolts in reverse of the removal sequence to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft gears.
  6.  
  7. While firmly holding the camshafts in place, tighten the camshaft gear bolts to 49 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve cover.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tubes from the valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover and the valve cover gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft sprockets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft cap bolts in several steps in the sequence shown.
    NOTE
    Keep the camshaft caps in order for reinstallation.

  17. Remove the camshaft caps and camshafts.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the camshaft caps with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake/exhaust camshaft caps in their original positions, and tighten the cap bolts in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft sprockets.
  6.  
  7. Install the valve cover and gasket. Tighten the bolts nuts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the spark plugs wires to the spark plugs.
  10.  
  11. Connect the CMP sensor.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine appearance cover. Tighten the bolts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the ventilation tubes to the valve cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the timing belt.
  18.
