Adjustment



  1. Adjust the rear brakes.
  2.  

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes.

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Check the parking brake cables for free movement.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Move the front seats backward to ensure there is enough working space.
  10.  
  11. Pry off the plastic caps that cover the access holes to the parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket-screws.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the screws that secure the parking brake console hood to the tunnel brackets.
  14.  
  15. Raise the console hood to expose the parking brake lever assembly and the adjustment nut.
  16.  
  17. Partially raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Turn the adjustment nut on the lever assembly until the wheels are difficult to turn.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the nut until the rear wheels are just free to turn.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Position the parking brake console hood and fasten it to the tunnel brackets with the screws.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket screws 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Snap in the plastic caps that cover the access holes to the parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket screws.
  30.  
  31. Adjust the front seats to their previous position.
  32.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the rear wheels.

  3. Remove the retaining ring for the parking brake cable on each side of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the plastic sleeve.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever and from the brake backing plate.

  9. Remove the bolts that fasten the brake cable to the holding bracket on the rear axle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts from the rear axle mounting bracket on each side of the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt that fastens the brake cable to the underbody side bracket on each side of the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cable.

  17. Remove the parking brake cables from the welded body bracket.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the new parking brake cable through the brake backing plate. Use a new cable if the original is frayed or damaged. Attach the cable to the parking brake shoe lever.
  2.  
  3. Insert the plastic sleeve into the brake backing plate and press in the retaining ring. Make sure the parking brake cable is routed correctly.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake drums and fasten the caulking nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rear brake drum caulking nut to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear wheels.
  10.  
  11. Install the parking brake cable to the underbody side brackets on each side of the vehicle, and a bracket near the underbody side bracket.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the parking brake cable-to-underbody side and near side bracket bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the parking cable on the rear axle brackets on each side of the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the parking brake cable-to-rear axle bracket bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Insert the parking brake cables through the welded body bracket.
  20.  
  21. Adjust the length of parking brake cable.
  22.
