Adjustment



  1. Remove the brake drum.
  2.  
  3. Using the rear brake adjuster nut, turn the adjuster assembly in until a sufficient amount of drag occurs on the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Place the parking brake lever stops against the edge of the shoe web. If necessary, loosen the park brake cable at the equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum.
    NOTE
    If the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum, the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum is adjusted.

  8.  
  9. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times. Verify the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the park brake.
  12.  

  1. Remove the brake drum.
  2.  
  3. Using the rear brake adjuster nut, turn the adjuster assembly in until a sufficient amount of drag occurs on the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Place the parking brake lever stops against the edge of the shoe web. If necessary, loosen the park brake cable at the equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum.
    NOTE
    If the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum, the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum is adjusted.

  9. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times. Verify the clicking sound of the adjuster assembly is not audible from either brake drum.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the parking brake.

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the leading shoe hold-down return spring.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the upper link of the connecting link spring of the leading shoe to relieve tension on the upper return spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper return spring and the adjuster.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the trailing shoe return spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the trailing shoe and lining.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower return spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the adjuster assembly and apply Molykote® 111 grease to the brake shoe contact points.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the threads of the adjuster for smooth rotation.
  4.  
  5. Install the trailing shoe and lining assembly with the hold-down spring, the washer and the pin.
  6.  
  7. Properly route the parking brake cable and attach it to the shoe lever.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower return spring on the shoe.
  10.  
  11. Install the leading shoe and adjuster assembly against the backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower return spring to the leading shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the adjuster assembly and turn it in as far as possible.
  16.  
  17. Position the spring clip toward the backing plate.
  18.  
  19. Install the leading shoe with the hold-down spring.
  20.  
  21. Attach the leading shoe upper link spring connection to apply tension to the return spring.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper return spring.
  24.  
  25. Ensure the adjuster assembly nut is drawn all the way to the stop.
  26.  
  27. Install the brake drum.
  28.  
  29. Install the axle nut and tighten the nut to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the wheels.
  32.  
  33. Adjust the rear brakes and the parking brake.
  34.  
  35. Check the brake fluid level.
  36.  

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the leading shoe hold-down return spring.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the upper link of the connecting link spring of the leading shoe to relieve tension on the upper return spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper return spring and the adjuster.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the trailing shoe return spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the trailing shoe and lining.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower return spring.

To install:

  25. Ensure the adjuster assembly nut is drawn all the way to the stop.
  26.

  29. Adjust the parking brake.
