Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor line.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake pipes from the brake hoses at the rear axle brackets by removing the cap screws and the retaining clip. Cap or tape the brake hose openings to prevent entry of foreign matter. Unclip the brake hose from the rear axle brackets.
  10.  
  11. Place support jacks under the arms of the rear axle and raise the rear axle arms slightly. Remove the shock absorbers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock absorbers.
  14.  
  15. Lower the support jacks and remove the rear springs.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left rear axle mounting bolts and the right rear axle mounting bracket bolts from the underbody. Pry the rear axle slightly with a screw-driver, if required.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear axle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Raise the rear axle and loosely fasten it to the vehicle underbody mountings with the rear axle-to-body bracket bolt.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear springs and insulators.
  4.  
  5. Raise the rear axle arm with the support jacks. Attach the shock absorber to the axle with the lower attachment bolt.
  6.  
  7. Connect the brake pressure hoses into the bracket on the rear axle.
  8.  
  9. Mount the retaining clips.
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake pipes to the brake hoses.
  12.  
  13. Bleed the brakes.
  14.  
  15. Install the parking brake.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle slightly and install the rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. At curb height, tighten the left rear axle-to-body bracket bolt and the right rear axle mounting bracket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the rear axle-to-body bracket bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the rear axle mounting bracket bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
  24.  
  25. Adjust the rear wheel brakes. Bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  26.  
  27. Connect the ABS sensor line.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the parking brake.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle completely.
  32.  

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor line.

  9. Disconnect the brake pipes from the brake hoses at the rear axle brackets by removing the cap screws and the retaining clip. Cap or tape the brake hose openings to prevent entry of foreign matter. Unclip the brake hose from the rear axle brackets.

  11. Place support jacks under the arms of the rear axle and raise the rear axle arms slightly. Remove the shock absorbers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock absorbers.
  14.  
  15. Lower the support jacks and remove the rear springs.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left rear axle mounting bolts and the right rear axle mounting bracket bolts from the underbody. Pry the rear axle slightly with a screw-driver, if required.

  19. Remove the rear axle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Raise the rear axle and loosely fasten it to the vehicle underbody mountings with the rear axle-to-body bracket bolt.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear springs and insulators.
  4.  
  5. Raise the rear axle arm with the support jacks. Attach the shock absorber to the axle with the lower attachment bolt.
  6.  
  7. Connect the brake pressure hoses into the bracket on the rear axle.
  8.  
  9. Mount the retaining clips.
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake pipes to the brake hoses.
  12.  
  13. Bleed the brakes.
  14.  
  15. Install the parking brake.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle slightly and install the rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. At curb height, tighten the left rear axle-to-body bracket bolt and the right rear axle mounting bracket bolts.

    Tighten the rear axle-to-body bracket bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Tighten the rear axle mounting bracket bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     

  20.  
  21. Adjust the rear wheel brakes. Bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. Connect the ABS sensor line.
  24.  
  25. Adjust the parking brake.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle completely.
  28.
