Removal & Installation




CAUTION
The sensing and the diagnosis module (SDM) can maintain sufficient voltage to deploy the airbags and pretensioners for up to 1 minute after the ignition has been turned OFF and the fuse has been removed. If the airbags and pretensioners are not disconnected, do not begin service until one minute has been passed after disconnecting power to the SDM. Failure to do so may cause personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver air bag module from the steering wheel, if equipped, as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel mounted controls, if equipped.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air bag mounting bolts and discard.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the electrical connector from the horn terminal and air bag module.
    1. Remove the air bag module.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Steering Wheel, Removal & Installation.-
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column trim cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the signal lamp switch and the wiper switch. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Multifunction Switch, Removal & Installation.-
  12.  
  13. Remove the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Remove the speakers, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the instrument cluster assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the side cover.
  18.  
  19. Using a taped flat-bladed tool, gently pry and remove the instrument panel lower cover .
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel center vent panel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the floor console.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cigar lighter and ashtray.
  26.  
  27. Remove the cupholder.
  28.  
  29. Remove the A/C controller from the instrument. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Control Panel, Removal & Installation.-

  31. Remove the audio system from the instrument panel.
  32.  
  33. Remove the digital clock.
  34.  
  35. Remove the glove box assembly from the instrument panel.
  36.  
  37. Remove the screws from the ALDL connector.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the necessary electrical connectors.
  40.  
  41. Remove the three bolts from the upper instrument panel.
  42.  
  43. Remove the instrument panel screw behind the HVAC controls.
  44.  
  45. Remove the instrument panel bolts above the steering column.
  46.  
  47. Remove the instrument panel bolts from the ends of the instrument panel.
  48.  
  49. Remove the two nuts from the lower left center of the instrument panel.
  50.  
  51. Remove the instrument panel end screws.
  52.  
  53. Remove the two nuts from the lower right center of the instrument panel.
  54.  
  55. Remove the tie-bar retaining bolts.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the wire harness from the instrument panel.
  58.  
  59. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  60.  
  61. Installation is the reverse order removal.
