Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine

Use care when servicing the oil pan. The engine main bearing caps are drilled and tapped for structural oil pan side bolts. Do not overlook the side bolts when attempting to remove the oil pan.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to disconnect any of the A/C lines from the compressor.



    Engine mount struts
     
    A/C compressor and set it aside
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    You will need to use a torque wrench adapter to remove and install the right side oil pan bolts.



    Catalytic converter pipe from the right side exhaust manifold
     
    Frame bolts and make certain that an engine stand (such as J 39580) is aligned below the engine, lower the frame
     
    Oil level sensor wiring harness connector
     
    Starter
     
    Transaxle brace from the oil pan
     
    Transaxle mount lower nuts
     
    Engine mount lower nuts and raise the engine with the support fixture
     
    Engine mount and bracket from the oil pan
     



    Oil pan and gasket

To install:

  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply a small amount of sealer GM 1234579 on both sides of the bearing cap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan gasket
     
    Oil pan. Tighten the bottom bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the side bolts, using a torque wrench adapter (tool J 39505), to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Engine mount and bracket to the oil pan. Torque the bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
     
    Lower the engine into position
     
    Transaxle lower nuts. Torque the nuts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Transaxle brace to the oil pan. Torque the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Catalytic converter pipe to the right side exhaust manifold. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Frame and use new frame to body bolts. Torque the front bolts to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm) and the rear bolts to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).

  7. Remove the engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    A/C compressor. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Engine mount struts. Torque the fasteners to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable

  11. Fill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks, repair if necessary.
  14.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine, transaxle and sub-frame from the vehicle and install the engine on an engine stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove the A/C compressor with the hoses from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine front cover.

  9. Remove the oil pan bolts and, using the pry points, remove the pan.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install 8mm (0.315 in) guides pins into the center oil pan rail bolt hole on each side of the engine block.

  3. Place a 3mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, on the block pan rail and the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
  4.  
  5. Position the oil pan onto the block.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 8mm (0.315 in) guides from the engine block.
  8.  
  9. Loosely install the oil pan bolts.

  11. Tighten the oil pan bolts in sequence shown. Tighten the 8mm bolts (1-11) to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Tighten the 6 mm bolts (12, 13) to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  13. Install the engine front cover.

  15. Place the A/C compressor in position to the cylinder block.
  16.  
  17. Loosely install the A/C compressor bolts.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the A/C compressor front upper bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Tighten the A/C compressor rear upper bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the A/C compressor rear lower bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Tighten the A/C compressor front lower bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the engine to the transmission and frame and install the assembled unit in the vehicle.
