Removal & Installation

3.4L Engine
Left Side
  1. Remove the right engine strut mount..
  2.
  3. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
  4.
  5. Remove the PCV valve from valve rocker arm cover.
    NOTE
Valve rocker arm cover gasket and sealant must be carefully trimmed away from lower intake manifold gasket. Failure to do so will damage the lower intake manifold gasket, causing a severe oil leak.

  6.
  7. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
    NOTE
When removing the valve rocker arm cover, make sure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.

  8.
  9. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Bump the end of the valve rocker arm cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.
  10.
  11. Trim valve cover gasket and sealant away from lower intake manifold gasket at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints.
  12.
  13. Remove the valve cover gasket.
  14.
  15. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  16.
  17. Clean the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.

To install:

NOTE
All gasket mating surfaces need to be free of oil and foreign material. Use GM P/N 12346139 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent, at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

NOTE
Apply sealant GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent, at the cylinder head lower intake joint.

  1. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints.
  2.
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover gasket into valve rocker arm cover. Ensure that the gasket is properly seated in the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
    NOTE
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4.
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the PCV valve to valve rocker arm cover.
  8.
  9. Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
  10.
  11. Install the right engine mount strut.
  12.

Right Side
  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.
  3. Remove the generator.
  4.
  5. Remove the generator bracket.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the engine right side spark plug wires.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the Evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve.
  10.
  11. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve.
