Spark Plug Wires

Inspection




NOTE
Spark plug wire integrity is vital for proper engine operation. A thorough inspection will be necessary to accurately identify conditions that may affect engine operation. Refer to the list below for items to be inspected.

  1. Inspect for correct routing of the spark plug wires. Improper routing may cause cross-firing.
  2.  
  3. Inspect each wire for any signs of cracks or splits in the wire.
  4.  
  5. Inspect each boot for the following conditions:
    NOTE
    If corrosion, carbon tracking or arcing are indicated on a spark plug wire boot or terminal both the wire and the component connected to the wire should be replaced.



    Tearing
     
    Piercing
     
    Arcing
     
    Carbon tracking
     
    Corroded terminal

Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine

NOTE
Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) from the front bank spark plugs.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wires from the retaining clips.
  4.  
  5. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Set the park brake.
  8.  
  9. Shift the transaxle into Neutral.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left and right engine mount strut bolts. Swing the engine mount struts aside.
  12.  
  13. Install the J 41131 rotation tool.
  14.  
  15. Pull on the engine in order to rotate the engine forward.

  17. Tighten the J 41131 tool.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) from the rear bank spark plugs.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spark plug wires from the retaining clips.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  24.  
  25. Remove the spark plug wires from the engine.
  26.  
  27. If you are replacing the spark plug wires, transfer any of the following components:

    Boot heat shields
     
    Spark plug wire conduit
     
    Spark plug wire retaining clips

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug wires to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.

  5. Install the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) to the rear bank spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Install the spark plug wires to the retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Carefully release the tension on the J 41131 tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the J 41131 tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the left and right engine mount struts.
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) to the front bank spark plugs.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the retaining clips.
  18.  

3.5L Engine

NOTE
Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wire(s) (2, 4, and 6) from the left side spark plug(s).
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug wire(s) (2, 4, and 6) from the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wire(s) from the retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wire(s) from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  12.  
  13. Set the park brake.
  14.  
  15. Shift the transaxle into neutral (N).
  16.  
  17. Remove the left and right engine mount struts.
  18.  
  19. Install the J 41131 rotation tool.
  20.  
  21. Pull on the engine in order to rotate the engine forward.

  23. Tighten the J 41131 tool.
  24.  
  25. Remove the spark plug wire(s) (1, 3, and/or 5) from the right side spark plug(s).
  26.  
  27. Remove the spark plug wire(s) (1, 3, and/or 5) from the ignition coil.
  28.  
  29. Remove the spark plug wire(s) from the retaining clip.
  30.  
  31. Remove the spark plug wire(s) from the engine.
  32.  
  33. If you are replacing the spark plug wire(s), transfer any of the following components:

    Spark plug wire conduit
     
    Spark plug wire retaining clips

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug wire(s) to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wire(s) to the retaining clip.
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wire(s) (1, 3, and 5) to the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Install the spark plug wire(s) (1, 3, and 5) to the right side spark plug(s).
  8.  
  9. Carefully release the tension on the J 41131 tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the J 41131 tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the left and right engine mount struts.
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plug wire(s) to the retaining clips.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wire(s) (2, 4, and/or 6) to the ignition coil.
  18.  
  19. Install the spark plug wire(s) (2, 4, and/or 6) from the left side spark plug(s).
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold cover.
  22.
