Removal & Installation

  1. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the inflator module.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the steering wheel control electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  8.  
  9. Install special tools J 42578 and J 1859-A to the steering wheel.

  11. Use J 42578 and J 1859-A in order to remove the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Remove J 42578 and J 1859-A from the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the controls and the control harness from the steering wheel.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the controls and the control harness to the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Install the wiring through the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the steering wheel control electrical connector.
    NOTE
     Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the steering wheel nut and tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the inflator module.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
