REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



E30 3 Series
  1. Open the hood. Disconnect the windshield washer hoses and the wiring for the heated washer jets, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with hood prop rods or gas springs, disconnect at the hood attachment point by pulling out the retainer and pin.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with removable hinge pins, remove the retainer and pull the hood off the body.
  6.  
  7. If not equipped with removable hinge pins, mark the alignment of the hinge on the hood and remove the hinge mounting bolts from the hood side. Remove the hood from the body.
  8.  
  9. Install in reverse order and check the adjustment.
  10.  

E36 3 Series
  1. Open the hood. Disconnect the windshield washer hoses and the wiring for the heated washer jets and the underhood lights.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the hood gas props at the hood attachment point by pulling out the retainer and pin.
  4.  
  5. Mark the alignment of the hinge on the hood and remove the hinge mounting bolts from the hood side. Remove the hood from the body.
  6.  
  7. Install in reverse order and check the adjustment.
  8.  

E34 5 Series
  1. Open the hood. Disconnect the windshield washer hoses and the wiring for the heated washer jets and the underhood lights.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the hood gas props at the hood attachment point by pulling out the retainer and pin.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood hinge pin retainer and remove the hinge pin.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood from the body.
  8.  
  9. Install in reverse order and check the adjustment.
  10.

E30 3 Series
  1. Screw in the hood stoppers on the body fully.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the side gaps by loosening the hinge mounting bolts on the hood and moving side to side.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the front hood height by loosening the bolts on the body side of the hood hinge and moving up and down. The hood should rest 0.039 inches (1.0mm) below the fenders with the hood stoppers fully retracted.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the rear roller so it matches the catch and slides in with no lateral force.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the rear catch so the rear hood height is equal with the fenders.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the hood stoppers so the hood slightly presses against the stoppers while in the closed position and the hood is on the same level as the fenders.
  12.  

E36 3 Series
  1. Remove the center grilles by knocking them out from behind. Remove the hood lock cable and adjust so there is no play.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the hood side gaps by loosening the hood hinge bolts on the hood and moving the hood side to side.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the hood locks by loosening the bolts and raising and lowering the hood, without allowing it to lock, to align the catches. Install 1 of the bolts with threadlocker and torque to 7.2 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Adjust the hood height at the front with the spring stopper. Loosen the bolt and adjust so the hood is equal height with the fenders.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the headlights so the upper edge of the housing is recessed 0.060 inches (1.5mm) from the edge of the hood. Loosen the headlight mounting screws and turn the expansion nuts. Have the headlights aimed after this adjustment.
  10.  

E34 5 Series
  1. Remove the center and side grilles.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the bolts on the hood lock ring mounted on the hood. Screw in the hood stopper pads on the body.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the hood side gaps by loosening the hinge mounts accessible through the grille openings.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the hood height by screwing in or out the hood lock ring so the hood is recessed 0.039 inches (1.0mm) from the fenders. The lock is automatically adjusted in the fore and aft direction when the hood is closed and the bolts are tightened.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the hood height with the hood stopper pads so the hood is even with the fenders when closed.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the rear roller so it matches the catch and slides in with no lateral force.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the rear catch so the rear hood height is equal with the fenders.
