WITH M42 ENGINE

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil. Disconnect the air cleaner and the heater hoses at the firewall. Remove the fan and fan cowl. Remove the dipstick tube and idle speed control.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold and at the transmission mount. Disconnect the engine mounts. Disconnect the power steering pump and the reservoir at the support arm.
  6.  
  7. Lift the engine to provide clearance for the pan removal. Remove the lower oil pan mounting bolts and take off the lower oil pan. Remove the upper section oil pan bolts and the oil pump intake. Remove the upper oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket. Fill the holes at the corners of the gasket where the covers, block and pan join with non-hardening sealer.
  10.  
  11. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Install the upper pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 6.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm). Install the lower pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 6.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).

WITH M20 ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it. Drain the engine oil. On the 325iX remove the front subframe and differential.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front lower splash guard, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical terminal from the oil sending unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering gear from the front axle carrier.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel cover reinforcement.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan. Remove the oil pump bolts and take out the oil pump and oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan, paying attention to the following points:
    1. Clean the gasket surfaces and use a new gasket on the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Torque M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 6.5-8.0 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Coat the joints on the ends of the front engine cover with a non-hardening sealing compound.
    6.  
    7. Install the sending unit wire and the engine oil. If the power steering gear was removed, make sure to refill and bleed this system.

WITH S14 ENGINE
  1. Remove the dipstick. Remove the splash guard from underneath the engine. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drain plug and drain the oil. Unscrew all the bolts for the lower oil pan and remove it.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower flywheel housing cover by removing 3 the bolts at the bottom of the flywheel housing and the 2 bolts in the cover just ahead of the flywheel housing.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the oil level sending unit plug. Unbolt the oil pan bracket. Disconnect the ground lead. Loosen its clamp and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the upper oil pan. Clean all sealing surfaces. Supply a new gasket and the coat the joints where the timing case cover and block meet with a brush-on sealant. Install the pan and torque the bolts evenly to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Reverse the remaining removal procedures to install, cleaning all sealing surfaces and using a new gasket on the lower pan, also. Torque the lower pan bolts, also, to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan drain plug, torquing to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm). Refill the oil pan with the required amount of approved oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

E36 3 Series

WITH M42 ENGINE

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil. Disconnect the air cleaner and the heater hoses at the firewall. Remove the fan and fan cowl. Remove the dipstick tube and idle speed control.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold and at the transmission mount. Disconnect the engine mounts. Disconnect the power steering pump and the reservoir at the support arm.
  6.  
  7. Lift the engine to provide clearance for the pan removal. Remove the lower oil pan mounting bolts and take off the lower oil pan. Remove the upper section oil pan bolts and the oil pump intake. Remove the upper oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Clean the mounting surfaces and install a new gasket. Fill the holes at the corners of the gasket where the covers, block and pan join with non-hardening sealer.
  10.  
  11. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Install the upper pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 6.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm). Install the lower pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 6.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).

WITH M50 ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Raise and safely support the car. Drain the oil. Remove the exhaust system. Place the hood in the full upright position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly with the air flow sensor. Remove the alternator cooling air duct assembly. Remove the air intake cowl for the heater. Remove the fan and fan cowl. Release the radiator from the clips at the top.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dipstick tube. Loosen the power steering fluid reservoir from its mounts and pull forward. Remove the engine belt. Remove the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor from the engine and support them with wire. Do not disconnect the lines.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper nuts on the engine mounts. Loosen the lower nuts on the engine mounts by 4 turns. Lift the engine carefully up as far as possible without damaging any hoses, wires or components.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the pan. Remove the oil pump sprocket nut with left hand threads and pull the sprocket off the shaft. Remove the oil pump pickup support bolts and the oil pump mounting bolts. Remove the oil pump and oil pan.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean all mounting surfaces. Apply non-hardening sealer to the block, cover and pan joints. Install a new gasket and place the pan into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 15-17 ft. lbs. (20-24 Nm). Torque the sprocket nut to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan and torque the M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 6.5-8.0 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the engine and torque the M8 nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and M10 nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Make sure the ground strap is attached.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. Install the engine belt, power steering reservoir, dipstick tube, fan and fan cowl. Attach the radiator, air intake duct and alternator cooling duct. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with oil and install the exhaust system.
  12.  

E34 5 Series

WITH M20 ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front lower splash guard, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical terminal from the oil sending unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering gear from the front axle carrier.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel cover reinforcement.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the oil pan. Remove the oil pump bolts and take out the oil pump and oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan, paying attention to the following points:
    1. Clean the gasket surfaces and use a new gasket on the oil pan.
    2.  
    3. Torque M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 6.5-8.0 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Coat the joints on the ends of the front engine cover with a non-hardening sealing compound.
    6.  
    7. Install the sending unit wire and the engine oil. If the power steering gear was removed, make sure to refill and bleed this system.

WITH M30 AND S38 ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the hose clamp for the air intake hose. Remove the mounting nut for the air cleaner, and remove the air cleaner. Remove the fan and shroud.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical plug and overflow hose from the coolant expansion tank. Be careful not to kink the hose. Remove the mounting nuts and remove the tank.
  4.  
  5. Remove the splash guard for the power steering pump. Loosen the locknut for the pump adjustment and remove the through bolt that mounts the pump lower bracket (which contains the adjustment mechanism) to the block. Swing the bracket aside. Unscrew the bolt attaching the power steering pump lines to the block and shift them aside too.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the oil pipe holder. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bracket for the exhaust pipes.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ground strap from the engine. Remove the nuts and washers attaching the engine to the mounts on both sides.
  12.  
  13. Attach an engine lifting sling to the hooks at either end of the cylinder head. Lift the engine as necessary for clearance.
  14.  
  15. Remove all oil pan mounting bolts and remove the pan.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Clean both sealing surfaces and supply a new gasket. Coat the 4 joints, between the block and timing case cover at the front and the block and rear main seal housing cover at the rear, with a proper sealer. Install the oil pan bolts and torque them to 6.5-7.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Reverse the remaining procedures to install the oil pan. Torque the engine mount nuts to 31-34 ft. lbs. (42-47 Nm). Refill the oil pan with the required amount and type of oil.
  4.  

WITH M50 ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Raise and safely support the car. Drain the oil. Remove the exhaust system. Place the hood in the full upright position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly with the air flow sensor. Remove the alternator cooling air duct assembly. Remove the air intake cowl for the heater. Remove the fan and fan cowl. Release the radiator from the clips at the top.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dipstick tube. Loosen the power steering fluid reservoir from its mounts and pull forward. Remove the engine belt. Remove the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor from the engine and support them with wire. Do not disconnect the lines.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper nuts on the engine mounts. Loosen the lower nuts on the engine mounts by 4 turns. Lift the engine carefully up as far as possible without damaging any hoses, wires or components.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts and lower the pan. Remove the oil pump sprocket nut with left hand threads and pull the sprocket off the shaft. Remove the oil pump pickup support bolts and the oil pump mounting bolts. Remove the oil pump and oil pan.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean all mounting surfaces. Apply non-hardening sealer to the block, cover and pan joints. Install a new gasket and place the pan into position.

  3. Install the oil pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 15-17 ft. lbs. (20-24 Nm). Torque the sprocket nut to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).

  5. Install the oil pan and torque the M8 bolts to 13-15 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm) and M6 bolts to 6.5-8.0 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the engine and torque the M8 nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and M10 nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Make sure the ground strap is attached.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. Install the engine belt, power steering reservoir, dipstick tube, fan and fan cowl. Attach the radiator, air intake duct and alternator cooling duct. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with oil and install the exhaust system.
