Cylinder Identifying Sender

Print

The cylinder identifying sender provides the DME unit information on engine position. A signal is produced that the DME can interpret and use to control the fuel injection and ignition.

There are 3 types of senders. The M20, M30 and S38 engines mount on ignition lead for cylinder 6. The M42 and M50 engines mount on the timing cover and can be called the camshaft sensor. The S14 engines mount on the bellhousing. The sensor on the S14 engine connects to a gray colored plug mounted in the center of a group of 3 plugs on the engine compartment rear wall, next to the engine harness connector and diagnosis socket.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

M20, M30 & S38 Engines
  1. The ignition switch must be in the OFF position.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap cover to expose the ignition leads. The sensor will be mounted on the ignition lead for cylinder 6. Disconnect cylinder 6 ignition lead from the distributor cap.
  4.
  5. Trace the sensor lead back to the connector and disconnect. The S38 engine might require the fan and shroud be removed and the water pipe be moved out of the way to access the plug.
  6.
  7. Cut the distributor connector off the lead and slide the sensor off. Alternately, the entire ignition lead may be replaced if the entire assembly is available as a single unit.
  8.

To install:
  1. Slide the new sensor onto the ignition lead.
  2.
  3. Strip off 1 / 4 in. (5mm) of insulation from the ignition lead end. Place a new coupling on the lead. Crimp the new coupling on the wire end first, then crimp the insulation end.
  4.
  5. Remove the cut off wire from the distributor connector. Use tool 12 1 096 or equivalent to install the lead into the distributor connector.
  6.
  7. Install the ignition lead and the distributor cover. Install the fan, shroud and water pipe on the S38 engine, if removed.
  8.

M42 & M50 Engines
  1. The ignition switch must be in the OFF position.
  2.
  3. The cylinder identifying connector is mounted on the timing cover with a bolt.
  4.
  5. Remove the bolt and pull the sensor out of the timing cover.
  6.
  7. Unplug the connector at the mounting bracket.
  8.

To install:
  1. Check the o-ring around the sensor and install in the timing cover.
  2.
  3. Tighten the mounting bolt to 4.5-5.5 ft. lbs. (6-8 Nm).
  4.
  5. Plug in the connector and route the wire.
  6.

S14 Engine
  1. The ignition switch must be in the OFF position.
  2.
  3. The cylinder identifying connector is mounted on the left side of the bell housing. There is a shield mounted over the sensor with 2 bolts.
  4.
  5. Remove the bolts and pull the sensor out of the bell housing.
  6.
  7. Unplug the connector at the mounting bracket.
  8.

To install:
  1. Install in the bell housing with the shield.
  2.
  3. Tighten the mounting bolts to 4.5-5.5 ft. lbs. (6-8 Nm).
  4.
  5. Plug in the connector and route the wire.
  6.
