REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

This procedure for removing and installing the windshield requires special tools and techniques. If you are not comfortable with your ability to complete this procedure, allow a glass professional to replace the windshield. An incorrectly installed windshield can leak and cause wind noise.

E30 3 Series

This procedure does not include the M3. The M3 uses a windshield mounting scheme similar to that of the E34 5 Series. The M3 uses a square cross section cement bead as opposed to the triangle shaped cross section of the E34 5 Series.

  1. Pull out the trim strips from around the windshield. Loosen the gaskets grip on the windshield and body opening.
  2.
  3. Press the windshield out of the gasket starting at an upper corner. Sit in the passenger seat and use you feet to press on the glass. Guide the glass out of the gasket.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the new gasket in the body opening. Place the seam at the bottom center.
  2.
  3. Use a non-petroleum lubricant on the glass edge and the gasket. Press the glass into the gasket starting at the center.
  4.
  5. Use a flat bladed tool and push the gasket over and around the glass.
  6.
  7. Install the trim strips into the gasket and press into place. Start at the center. Check for leaks.
  8.

E36 3 Series
  1. Remove the hood and cowl covers beneath the windshield.
  2.
  3. Pull out the seals from around the windshield. Apply protective tape to the finish around the windshield.
  4.
  5. Remove the inside mirror and the A-pillar trim panels.
  6.
  7. Use a cement cutting tool to cut the cement bead around the windshield. Remove the windshield.
  8.

To install:
  1. Reduce the thickness of the remaining cement to 0.020 inches (0.5mm). This is true for the remaining cement on the body opening and for the cement on the windshield if the windshield is being reused.
  2.
  3. Touch-up any paint chips with anti-rust primer. Install the upper seal onto the windshield.
  4.
  5. Check the condition of the rubber pads and replace if necessary. Apply primer from the cement kit to the windshield and body opening. Allow to dry for 10 minutes.
  6.
  7. Remove the protective tape from the finish. Install the hood and align. Install tools 51 3 032 or equivalent, into the cowl and tools 51 3 032 or equivalent, to the frame with the doors open.
  8.
  9. Cut a notch into the cement cartridge nozzle to produce a right triangle of cement with a base width of 0.275 inches (7mm) and a height of 0.433 inches (11mm). Apply cement to the windshield 0.354 inches (9mm) from the bottom, 0.196 inches. (5mm) from the sides and 0.157 inches (4mm) from the top. Install the glass quickly into the opening.
  10.
  11. Press the glass up to meet the roof. Use tape to secure the glass from sliding down. Allow the cement to dry and remove the tools. Check for leaks.
