REMOVAL and INSTALLATION

Filter Element
E30 318i, 318is AND 318iC
  1. Loosen the hose clamp at the air flow meter. Disconnect the hose at the air flow meter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air flow meter electrical connection by rotating the outer ring and pulling off.
  4.  
  5. Unsnap the 4 clips securing the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly to the lower assembly.
  6.  
  7. Lift the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly up and out of the engine compartment. Handle the air flow meter with care.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air filter element. Clean the lower plenum of the air cleaner assembly as it tends to collect large pieces of dirt and leaves.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the lower portion of the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Replace the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place. Connect the air flow meter electrical connection by aligning the marks on the connectors and rotating the outer ring until it locks into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hose to the air flow meter and tighten the hose clamp.
  8.

  1. Unsnap the 4 clips holding the upper section of the air cleaner to the lower.
  2.  
  3. Lift the upper section to remove the air filter element.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air filter element. Clean the lower plenum of the air cleaner assembly as it tends to collect large pieces of dirt and leaves.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the lower portion of the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Replace the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place.
  6.  

E30 325i, 325iX AND 325iC
  1. Loosen the hose clamp at the air flow meter. Disconnect the hose at the air flow meter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air flow meter electrical connection by depressing the clip and pulling off. Remove the 2 nuts securing the air cleaner to the bracket. Cut off the wire tie holding the electrical lead, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner from the engine compartment. Unsnap the 4 clips securing the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly to the lower assembly.
  6.  
  7. Lift the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly off the lower section. Handle the air flow meter with care.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air filter element. Clean the lower plenum of the air cleaner assembly as it tends to collect large pieces of dirt and leaves.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the lower portion of the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Replace the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place. Replace the assembly in the engine compartment. Connect the air flow meter electrical connection and press until it locks in place. Install a new wire tie. Tighten the nuts securing the air cleaner to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hose to the air flow meter and tighten the hose clamp.
  8.

  1. Pull up on the air filter element cover and remove the filter.
  2.  
  3. Clean the interior of the air cleaner housing of dirt and leaves.
  4.  
  5. Install the new element. Be sure the element is installed in the correct direction as marked on the element.
  6.  
  7. Replace the element cover by snapping into place.
  8.  

E34 525i WITH M20 ENGINE
  1. Loosen the hose clamp at the air flow meter. Disconnect the hose at the air flow meter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air flow meter electrical connection by depressing the clip and pulling off.
  4.  
  5. Unsnap the 4 clips securing the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly to the lower assembly.
  6.  
  7. Lift the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly up and out of the engine compartment. Handle the air flow meter with care.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air filter element. Clean the lower plenum of the air cleaner assembly as it tends to collect large pieces of dirt and leaves.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the lower portion of the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Replace the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place. Connect the air flow meter electrical connection by aligning connectors and pressing together until it locks into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hose to the air flow meter and tighten the hose clamp.
  8.  

E34 525i WITH M50 ENGINE
  1. Loosen the hose clamp holding the hose to the air flow meter. Disconnect the hose from the air flow meter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nuts holding the air cleaner to the bracket and push the unit back to gain some clearance.
  4.  
  5. Unsnap the 4 clips holding the halves of the air cleaner. Separate the halves.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air filter element and clean the interior of the housing of dirt and leaves.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Press together the sections of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place. Install the 2 nuts holding the air cleaner to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hose to the air flow meter and tighten the hose clamp.
  8.  

535i
  1. Loosen the hose clamp at the air flow meter. Disconnect the hose at the air flow meter.
  2.  
  3. Unsnap the 6 clips securing the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly to the lower assembly.
  4.  
  5. Lift the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly up.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air filter element. Clean the lower plenum of the air cleaner assembly as it tends to collect large pieces of dirt and leaves.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the new element in the lower portion of the air cleaner. The element will be marked as to the correct position with an arrow pointing in the direction of air flow or by some other means.
  2.  
  3. Replace the upper portion of the air cleaner assembly. Be sure that the air filter element seals the upper and lower sections completely. If not, check that you are using the correct element or that the element is properly installed in the housing.
  4.  
  5. Snap the clips into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hose to the air flow meter and tighten the hose clamp.
  8.

  1. Remove the nuts holding the air cleaner to the bracket and push the unit back to gain some clearance.
