REMOVAL and INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Gasoline is very dangerous and can cause explosion and fire if exposed to an ignition source. Keep all flame and sparks away from the vehicle during servicing otherwise personal injury or property damage can occur. Gasoline can also cause personal discomfort if it is allowed to contact the skin for any period of time. Flush area with water if exposed to gasoline.

E30 3 SERIES

The fuel filter is located near the fuel pump at the rear axle of the vehicle. A set of fuel line block off clamps are needed for this procedure. They are available at most automotive parts stores at reasonable prices.

  1. Install the fuel line block off clamps on both the inlet and outlet lines to the fuel filter. This will prevent fuel from leaking out of the hoses once the filter is removed.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the clamps holding the body of the fuel filter. Loosen the fuel line clamps.
  4.  
  5. Use a container to catch the fuel left in the filter and remove the hoses from the filter. Remove the filter.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Note the direction of flow of the new filter and install in the clamps.
  2.  
  3. Attach the fuel lines to the correct ends of the filter and tighten the hose clamps.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the filter body clamps and remove the fuel line clamps. Check the area for leaks.
  6.  

E36 318i AND 318iS

The fuel filter is located on the left side front frame rail. A set of fuel line block off clamps are needed for this procedure. They are available at most automotive parts stores at reasonable prices.

  1. Install the fuel line block off clamps on both the inlet and outlet lines to the fuel filter. This will prevent fuel from leaking out of the hoses once the filter is removed.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the fuel line clamps. Use a container to catch the fuel left in the filter and remove the hoses from the filter, top hose first.
  4.  
  5. Remove the filter by loosening the clamp bolt and prying the clamp apart.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Note the direction of flow of the new filter and install the filter. Tighten the clamp bolt.
  2.  
  3. Attach the fuel lines to the correct ends of the filter and tighten the hose clamps.
  4.  
  5. Check the area for leaks.
  6.  

E36 325i AND 325iS

The fuel filter is located on the left side front frame rail. A set of fuel line block off clamps are needed for this procedure. They are available at most automotive parts stores at reasonable prices.

  1. Remove the dust cover by loosening the hose clamps.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel line block off clamps on both the inlet and outlet lines to the fuel filter. This will prevent fuel from leaking out of the hoses once the filter is removed.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the fuel line clamps. Use a container to catch the fuel left in the filter and remove the hoses from the filter, top hose first.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the clamp holding the body of the fuel filter. Remove the filter by pulling down and out.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Note the direction of flow of the new filter and install in the clamp.
  2.  
  3. Attach the fuel lines to the correct ends of the filter and tighten the hose clamps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel line clamps. Check the area for leaks.
  6.  

E34 5 SERIES

  5. Use a container to catch the fuel left in the filter and remove the hoses from the filter. Remove the filter. Remove the rubber ring from the filter.

To install:
  1. Note the direction of flow of the new filter and install in the clamp. Be sure to fit the rubber ring from the old filter on the new unit.
  2.  
  3. Attach the fuel lines to the correct ends of the filter and tighten the hose clamps.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the filter body clamp and remove the fuel line clamps. Check the area for leaks.
