Neutral Safety Switch



  1. Remove the 3mm hex head fastener from the gear selector knob and remove the knob.
  2.  
  3. Carefully release the gear selector housing cover from the console.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the neutral safety switch mounting fasteners.
  6.  
  7. Align the slot of the switch with the slot of the switch housing.
  8.  
  9. Move the gear selector as necessary to engage the pin into the slots of the switch.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the switch mounting fasteners.
  12.  
  13. Install the trim covers.
  14.  
  15. Install the gear selector's release button such that the pin is installed into the hole on the gear selector linkage and install the gear selector knob onto the selector shaft.

  1. Place the gear selector lever in the P position.
  2.  
  3. From under the vehicle, hold the bolt on the end of the transmission mounted shift lever with Tool No. 24 5 210 or equivalent to prevent the cable from being damaged. Loosen the bolt.
  4.  
  5. Push the transmission mounted shift lever forward while pushing the cable rearwards.
  6.  
  7. Torque the shift lever bolt to 7-9 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the shift rod from the shifter lever
  2.  
  3. Place the shifter into neutral and the transmission lever into neutral.
  4.  
  5. Press the shifter forward against the neutral gate lockout and adjust the shifter rod to fit into the shifter lever.
  6.  
  7. Shorten the shift rod effective length by screwing in the shift rod pin 1-2 turns. Attach the pin to the lever.
  8.  

  1. Move the selector lever to P position. Loosen the nut until the cable is free.
  2.  
  3. Push the transmission lever to the D or P position. Then push the cable rod in the opposite direction.
  4.  
  5. Clamp down the cable rod without tension.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut to 7.0-8.5 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    NOTE
    Do not bend the cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Move the selector lever to P position. Loosen the nut until the cable is free.
  4.  
  5. Push the transmission lever to the D or P position. Then, push the cable rod in the opposite direction.
  6.  
  7. Clamp down the cable rod without tension.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the nut to 84-102 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
    NOTE
    Do not bend the cable.

  1. On the injection system throttle body, loosen the 2 locknuts at the end of the throttle cable and adjust the cable until there is a play of 0.010-0.030 inches (0.25-0.76mm).
  2.  
  3. Loosen the locknut and lower the kickdown stop under the accelerator pedal. Have someone depress the accelerator pedal until the transmission detent can be felt. Then, back the kickdown stop back out until it just touches the pedal.
  4.  
  5. Check that the distance from the seal at the throttle body end of the cable housing is at least 1.732 inch (44mm) from the rear end of the threaded sleeve. If this dimension checks out, tighten all the locknuts.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. On the injection system throttle body, loosen the 2 locknuts at the end of the throttle cable and adjust the cable until there is a play of 0.010-0.030 inches (0.254-0.762mm).
  4.  
  5. Loosen the locknut and lower the kickdown stop under the accelerator pedal. Have someone depress the accelerator pedal until the transmission detent can be felt. Then, back the kickdown stop back out until it just touches the pedal.
  6.  
  7. Check that the distance from the seal at the throttle body end of the cable housing is at least 1.732 inches (43.9mm) from the rear end of the threaded sleeve and tighten the locknuts.
