Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2

Removal & Installation



3.0L (M54) Engines

CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cover from the fuel injectors.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the plug connection for temperature sensor.

  7. Press down on the catch spring and remove the temperature sensor from intake air manifold.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Check the sealing ring on temperature sensor for damage and replace it if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Before installing the sensor, coat the sealing ring with an anti-seize material.
  4.  
  5. Press down on the catch spring and replace the temperature sensor

3.2L (S52) Engines

CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the throttle valve neck, but the cables and throttle valve preheating unit remains connected.

  5. Depress interlock button (1), unclip temperature sensor and remove from intake air manifold.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Depress interlock button, and return the temperature sensor to the intake air manifold.
  2.  
  3. Connect the plug connection on the temperature sensor.

6-Cylinder Engines
  1. Remove the intake air boot from throttle housing assembly. If necessary, for additional room, remove the throttle body housing and place aside leaving the hoses, throttle cables and electrical connectors attached.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor from the manifold.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, making sure to use a new seals and/or gaskets on removed components.
  8.  

M44 Engines
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the IAT sensor.
  2.  
  3. Release the IAT sensor retainer clip, then remove the sensor from the air filter housing.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  6.  

Testing



Use a BMW service tester, the OBD I blink code or on OBD II vehicles, use a suitable Data Scan Tool (DST) to check for faults and/or if capable, to read the values of the components. If this diagnostic equipment is not available, proceed as follows.


WARNING
When checking component values (volts or ohms) a suitable digital volt/ohmmeter must be used otherwise the circuit and/or component may be damaged.
