Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake air manifold
  4.  
  5. Unclip plug connection from holder of cable duct and disconnect.

  6.  
  7. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 1-3.

  9. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 4-6.

To install:

  1. Clean support face of knock sensors on engine block.
  2.  
  3. Replace each sensor via the retaining screws.
  4.  


CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Unclip and disconnect the plug connection (1) for the knock sensor for cylinders 4 to 6.
  6.  
  7. The knock sensor for cylinders 1 to 3 is removed via a screw.

To install:

  1. Clean the support face of the knock sensors on engine block.
  2.  
  3. Attach the knock sensors with the retaining screws.
    WARNING
    Fitting the knock sensors incorrectly during the assembly will cause engine damage!


    NOTE
    The knock sensor with the short cable leads to cylinders 4 to 6.

  9. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 4-6.

To install:

  1. Clean support face of knock sensors on engine block.
  2.  
  3. Replace each sensor via the retaining screws.

  7. Disconnect the plug-in wires to the sensors
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws that retain the sensors.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sensors
  12.  

To install:

  1. Replace the sensors
  2.  
  3. Tighten the screws and attach the plug-in connections.
  4.  
  5. Clear any fault messages.
  6.

  1. Replace the sensors
  2.  
  3. Tighten the screws and attach the plug-in connections.
  4.  
  5. Clear any fault messages.
  6.

  1. Replace the sensors
  2.  
  3. Tighten the screws and attach the plug-in connections.
  4.

  7. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 1-3.

  9. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 4-6.

To install:

  1. Clean support face of knock sensors on engine block.
  2.  
  3. Replace each sensor via the retaining screws.
  4.  


CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper section of the manifold.
  4.  
  5. For cylinder group 1-2, the knock sensor can be seen between the oil filter and the intake system.
  6.  
  7. To gain access, the air intake hose for the fuel injectors on the neck (1) of fuel rail must be removed.

  9. To remove the knock sensor, slightly unscrew the screw that mounts the coolant pipe on the engine block, gently pull the pipe forward and fish out the sensor from behind the coolant pipe.

  11. For the knock sensor on cylinder group 3-4, remove the screw and the sensor is released.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install the sensors, follow the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  


CAUTION

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.

  3. Remove the intake air manifold
  4.  
  5. Unclip plug connection from holder of cable duct and disconnect.

  7. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 1-3.

  9. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 4-6.

To install:

  1. Clean support face of knock sensors on engine block.
  2.  
  3. Replace each sensor via the retaining screws.
  4.  

2.8L (M52) And 3.2L (S52) Engines

CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Unclip and disconnect the plug connection (1) for the knock sensor for cylinders 4 to 6.
  6.  
  7. The knock sensor for cylinders 1 to 3 is removed via a screw.

To install:

  1. Clean the support face of the knock sensors on engine block.

  3. Attach the knock sensors with the retaining screws.

2.8L (M52) Engines

CAUTION

  3. Remove the air intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Unclip and disconnect the plug connection (1) for the knock sensor for cylinders 4 to 6.
  6.  
  7. The knock sensor for cylinders 1 to 3 is removed via a screw.

To install:

  1. Clean the support face of the knock sensors on engine block.

  3. Remove the intake air manifold
  4.  
  5. Unclip plug connection from holder of cable duct and disconnect.

  7. Unscrew the screw and remove the knock sensor for Cylinder Bank 1-3.

  7. The knock sensor for cylinders 1 to 3 is removed via a screw.

5.4L (M73) Engine-Left Sensor

CAUTION
Make sure that the ignition is switched off and no electrical equipment is on or running.

  1. Access the fault memory of control unit of Digital Motor Electronics (DME), check for any stored fault messages, rectify those faults and clear the fault memory.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the screws for the knock sensor 3and 4 in their respective locations.

To install:

  1. Return the sensors in their proper places (making sure not to mix them) and screw them into place.
