Removal & Installation

M52 & M54
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Engine cover

    Ignition coils

Wiring harness of ignition coils from cylinder head cover

    Hose for the engine breather

    Grounding straps

    Valve cover

  4.

To install:

  1. Remove sealing debris from sealing faces of cylinder head and cylinder head cover. Apply a sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 on left and right sides at transition between cylinder head and VANOS adjustment unit.
  2.
  3. Apply a thin and even sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 at transition to half-moon sections at VANOS adjustment unit.
  4.
  5. Apply a thin and even sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 at transition to half-moon sections at rear of cylinder head. Check seals and replace if necessary.
  6.
  7. Make sure gasket is correctly seated on rear and front ends of cylinder head. Install cover bolts and align cylinder head cover. Hand-tighten all cover bolts without preload. Tighten cap nuts crosswise from inside to outside.
  8.

NOTE
Aluminum-magnesium materials. No steel screws/bolts may be used due to the threat of electrochemical corrosion. A magnesium crankcase requires aluminum screws/bolts exclusively. Aluminum screws/bolts must be replaced each time they are released. The end faces of aluminum screws/bolts are painted blue for the purposes of reliable identification. Jointing torque and angle of rotation must be observed without fail (risk of damage).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Acoustic cover

    Rod-type ignition coils

    Wiring harness for fuel injectors

    Tension strut

    Clean air duct

    Engine vent hose

Pull off metal bracket (2) in direction of arrow. Release screws

    Servo-drive in upward direction

    If necessary, release nuts

If necessary, remove secondary air valve

    Bolts and valve cover

  4.

To install:

  1. Replace all seals. Clean all sealing surfaces. Do not clean sealing faces (1 and 2) with a metal-cutting tool.
  2.
  3. Remove sealing debris from sealing faces of cylinder head and cylinder head cover. Apply a sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 on left and right sides at transition between cylinder head and VANOS adjustment unit.
  4.
  5. Apply a thin and even sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 at transition to half-moon sections at VANOS adjustment unit.
  6.
  7. Apply a thin and even sealing bead of Drei Bond 1209 at transition to half-moon sections at rear of cylinder head. Check seals and replace if necessary.
  8.
  9. Make sure gasket is correctly seated on rear and front ends of cylinder head. Install cover bolts and align cylinder head cover. Hand-tighten all cover bolts without preload. Tighten cap nuts crosswise from inside to outside.

    Injection pipe

Valve cover and bolts. Remove oil dipstick

  4.

To install:

  1. Note installation direction of sealing ring. Groove in sealing ring points outwards.
  2.
  3. Replace sealing ring and press into cylinder head cover until flush.
  4.
  5. Align gasket loosely in cover groove. Starting at corner radii, secure gasket in cover groove and press into groove so that it is free of tension.
  6.
  7. Replace spark plug domes. Coat rubber seals on spark plug dome with anti-friction rubber coating.
  8.
  9. Install spark plug domes in cylinder head. When fitting cylinder head cover: Align spark plug domes to cylinder head cover.
