Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the push/thrust rod on both sides.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the left and right stabilizer mounts. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the stabilizer bar in the vehicle, then install the left and right stabilizer mounts. Tighten the stabilizer mount bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the push/thrust rod on both sides.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  6.  

E30 Models
  1. Raise and support the front end.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar link nuts at the stabilizer bar. Disconnect the links from the bar on both sides.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts holding the left control arm bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts holding the stabilizer bar and bushings to the body. Remove the stabilizer bar out from the left side.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply a suitable lubricant between the sway bar and the rubber bushings to prevent squeaking noises.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar and bushings. Tighten the bushing mounts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) with the wrench flats parallel to the edges of the bar. Install the left control arm bracket and tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). The link to control arm mounting torque is 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  6.  

E36 Models
  1. Raise and support the front end.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar link nuts at the stabilizer bar. Disconnect the links from the bar on both sides.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts holding the stabilizer bar and bushings to the body. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply a suitable lubricant between the sway bar and the rubber bushings to prevent squeaking noises.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar and bushings. The bushing slit will face down. Tighten the bushing mounts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On models with strut mounted links, install the stabilizer bar links and torque the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) with the wrench flats parallel to the edges of the bar.
  6.  
  7. On models with control arm mounted links, tighten the link-to-control arm locknut to 30 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
