Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in this section.

The instrument cluster is replaced as a unit. Do not disassemble the instrument cluster.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the attaching screws and remove the lower instrument panel trim from under the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the mounting nuts for the trim just under the instrument carrier and remove it.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the 4 screws underneath and 2 above the instrument carrier and remove trim that surrounds the instrument carrier.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 screws at the top of the carrier, lift it out of the instrument panel, and then disconnect the plugs. To disconnect the combination plug, first pull the sliding clamp off the center.
  8.  
  9. To replace the speedometer, pull the speedometer from the instrument carrier.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the speedometer into the instrument carrier.
  2.  
  3. Position the instrument carrier close to the instrument panel, attach all electrical connectors to it, then slide the carrier into the instrument panel. Install the 2 retaining screws at the top of the panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

E30 Models
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
  2.  
  3. Turn the screws 90 degrees and remove the lower dashboard trim. Remove the mounting nuts for the lower instrument panel trim from behind the panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the instrument cluster, noting the lengths and positions for installation. Remove the upper 4 screws. Pull the instrument panel forward.
  6.  
  7. Pull the sliding lock out on the combination plug and remove the plug. Remove the other electrical connections and remove the cluster.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Connect the plugs and install the cluster.
  2.  
  3. Replace the screws in the original positions.
  4.  
  5. Install the trim panels.
  6.  

E36 Models

The instrument cluster may need to be re-coded if it is to be replaced. A BMW dealer or qualified shop will be able to perform this function. Check on the availability of this service before disconnecting the instrument cluster.

  1. Disarm the SRS (air bag) system as outlined in this section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel and the instrument cluster mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Protect the top of the steering column and tilt the instrument cluster down. Pull the cluster out.
  8.  
  9. Pivot the electrical connector's locking levers upward to disconnect the plugs. Remove the instrument cluster.

To install:

  1. With the levers fully released, connect the plugs and pivot downward until it locks into place.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument cluster and secure with the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Have a MVAC certified tech recover the A/C system refrigerant.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Rearm the SRS (air bag) system and re-code the radio.
  10.
