Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel, if equipped with an air bag (SRS).
  4.  
  5. Discharge the pressure reservoir by pushing in on the brake pedal about 10 times. Draw off hydraulic fluid in the supply tank.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the bolt and press the tie rod off the steering drop arm with the proper tool.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heat shield on the steering gear and disconnect the ride level height control pipes on the 750iL.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt and push the U-joint from the steering gear. Disconnect and plug the hydraulic lines.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew the steering gear mounting bolts and remove the steering gear.
    NOTE
    If necessary, move the steering drop arm by turning the steering stub to enable the removal of the gear assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear and tighten the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the hydraulic lines, using new seals.
  4.  
  5. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise or clockwise against the stop and then back about 1.7 turns until the marks are aligned.
  6.  
  7. Connect the U-joint to the steering gear making sure the bolt is in the locking groove of the steering stub.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod to the steering drop arm and replace the self locking nut.
  10.  
  11. Replace the heat shield on the steering gear and connect the ride level height control pipes on the 750iL.
  12.  
  13. Refill the hydraulic fluid and replace the steering wheel, if equipped with an air bag (SRS).
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Use a siphon tool to empty the power steering fluid reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt
     
    Steering shaft spindle off the steering gear
     
    Hydraulic fluid return line from the power steering unit. Drain the fluid into a sealable container.
     
    Pressure line
     
    Left and right side nuts and press off the tie rods where they connect to the spring struts
     
    Bolts attaching the steering unit to the front crossmember and remove it

To install:

  1. Install the steering unit to the front crossmember, then install and tighten the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install remaining components in reverse order of disassembly.
  4.  
  5. Note the following:

    The steering unit bolts to the rear holes of the axle carrier. Always use new self-locking nuts and tighten them to 29-34 ft. lbs. (40-46 Nm).
     
    When reconnecting tie rods to the spring struts, be sure tie rod pins and strut bores are clean. Replace self-locking nut and tighten to 40-48 ft. lbs. (54-66 Nm).
     
    Replace the seals on the power steering pump connection and tighten the bolt to 29-32 ft. lbs. (40-43 Nm).

  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Refill the fluid reservoir with specified fluid. Idle the engine and turn the steering wheel back and forth until it has reached full lock both right and left twice in each direction. Then, turn the engine OFF and refill the reservoir as necessary.
