Air Bag 2 System

NOTE
The Air Bag 2 system can be identified by the air bag telltale lamp located on the steering wheel.

CAUTION
All precautions must be adhered to or premature deployment of the air bag may occur causing personal injury. If the air bag system is damaged or rendered inoperative, the additional protection an air bag provides in a frontal collision will not be available and may lead to greater injury in an accident.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait for a period of approximately 10 minutes allowing the capacitor in the control unit to discharged.
  2.
  3. Remove the lower steering column trim or the small panel and disconnect the orange connector.
  4.
  5. Remove the three retaining bolts from the air bag module.
    1. Remove the air bag module and disconnect the wire on the back.
    2.
    3. Place the air bag module in the trunk with the pad facing up.
    4.

  6.
  7. Turn the steering wheel to straight-ahead position. Marks on steering gear and steering spindle should be aligned.
  8.
  9. Hold the steering wheel and remove the nut from the steering shaft.
  10.
  11. Mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the shaft and pull the steering wheel off the shaft.
    WARNING
Once the steering wheel is removed, the torsion spring securing the contact ring in its center position becomes effective. On no account should the steering be moved. The contact ring may be damaged.

  1. If the contact ring has moved, it must be adjusted to its center position. Determine the center position of the contact ring by pressing on the spring and rotating the ring completely left or right to the stop. Return the ring half the total number of turns and align the marks on the contact ring.
  2.
  3. Before installing the steering wheel, coat the slip ring with grease.
  4.
  5. Install the steering wheel in its original position with the lock pin in the bore. Install the washer and a new locknut. Torque the nut to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Do not use the steering column lock to hold the steering wheel against the torque. Hold the wheel during torquing.
  6.
  7. Install the air bag module and connect the wires. Torque the mounting bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm), right side first. Check for smooth rotation of the wheel and operation of the horn.
  8.
  9. Plug in the orange connector and install the lower steering column trim or panel.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

With Air Bag

CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

  1. Disarm the SRS and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Remove the lower steering column trim or the small panel and disconnect the orange connector.
  4.
  5. Use tool 00 2 110 or a T30 Torx® to remove the air bag module bolts from behind the steering wheel. Remove the air bag module and disconnect the wire on the back. Place the air bag module in a safe area with the trim pad facing up.
  6.
  7. Unlock the steering column with the ignition key. Turn the steering wheel to the straight position.
  8.
  9. Hold the steering wheel and remove the nut from the steering shaft.
  10.
  11. Mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the shaft and pull the steering wheel off the shaft.
  12.

To install:

  1. Install the steering wheel in its original position with the lock pin in the bore. Install the washer and a new locknut. Tighten the nut to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Do not use the steering column lock to hold the steering wheel against the torque. Hold the wheel during torquing.
  2.
  3. If the contact ring has moved out of position and needs to be returned to the center, press the spring and rotate the ring completely left or right to the stop. Turn the ring in the opposite direction 3 turns to align the marks.
  4.
  5. Install the air bag module and connect the wires. Using new bolts, torque the mounting bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm), right side first. Check for smooth rotation of the wheel and operation of the horn.
  6.
  7. Arm the SRS, as outlined in Section 6 of this manual.
